NORFOLK, Va. (June 22, 2014) - The STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series has a new young star. Today, Sam Mulholland-Wong of California Polytechnic State University bested five of the top collegiate lumberjack athletes in the country in a wire-tight competition to win the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Collegiate Championship. With the victory, Mulholland-Wong earned an automatic spot in the 2015 STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Professional Series. Trevor Beaudry (University of New Hampshire) finished second, while Garrett Gregorek (Paul Smith's College), Cody Labahn (Oregon State University), and Logan Hawks (Haywood Community College) tied for third).
"It hasn't really settled in yet. The way I started, at first I didn't think it would be possible," said Mulholland-Wong, who resides in Saratoga, Calif. "I've been traveling for 10 days, and have had a great time, but I'm glad it's done. Hopefully I'll come back next year (on the Professional Series) and do OK."
On Friday, the top 12 collegiate lumberjack athletes faced off, with the three best from two pools advancing to this afternoon's championship. Today, the athletes competed in four disciplines - the single buck, standing block chop, stock saw, and underhand chop - and Mulholland-Wong showcased his budding potential all afternoon. He etched his name in the record books, finishing the stock saw competition in 10.67 seconds, which is an all-time collegiate national record. He also finished second in the standing block chop, with a time of 23.585 seconds.
"With his performance today, Sam showed that he's a rising talent on our Series," said Brad Sorgen, executive producer of the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series. "This is the best and tightest field of athletes we've had in this Series' history. Today's event proves that the sport is positioned extremely well for the future."
Along with earning the designation of the best collegiate lumberjack athlete in the country, Mulholland-Wong will represent the U.S. on the international rookie team at the World Championship in Austria in November.
Beaudry also performed well, finishing in the top three in the stock saw, single buck and underhand chop events. Gregorek set a national collegiate record - and broke his own record from 2013 - in the standing block chop with a time of 22.5 second. Labahn won the single buck competition, and Hawks won the underhand chop. University of Minnesota's Ben Whelan finished sixth.
The STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series created the Collegiate Series in 2003 as a way to identify rising lumberjack athletes and now includes more than 60 participating colleges and universities around the country. Professionals like Walt Page (Cal Poly State), Nathan Waterfield (SUNY ESF Ranger School), Matt Slingerland (Montgomery Community College) and Adam LaSalle (University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point) got their start in the Collegiate Series.
