NORFOLK, Va. (May 29, 2014) - The STIHL®
Series presented by Ram Trucks announces the 12 collegiate athletes who will compete in the U.S. Collegiate Championships to be held June 20 to 22 at the Norfolk Scope Arena in Norfolk, Va.
"We are excited to announce the 12 talented collegiate athletes who will vie for our U.S. Collegiate Championship," said Brad Sorgen, executive producer of the STIHL®
Series. "These athletes are incredibly skilled and represent the future of our sport."
Five competitors earned their championship bids by winning their respective regional collegiate qualifiers. Those five athletes include NC State's Griffith Wilson (Southern Collegiate Qualifier winner); Oregon State's Cody Labahn (Western Collegiate Qualifier winner); Haywood Community College's Logan Hawks (Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Qualifier winner); Minnesota's Ben Whelan (Mid-West Collegiate Qualifier winner); and New Hampshire's Trevor Beaudry (Northeast Collegiate Qualifier winner).
The remaining seven athletes were chosen as "wildcards" and selected based on performance at qualifiers: Three River's Aaron Hovis; Warren Wilson College's Caleb Hawkins; Finger Lakes Community College's Derrick Tuttle; Paul Smith's College's Garrett Gregorek; West Virginia's Joshua Wilson; California Polytechnic State's Sam Mulholland; and Wisconsin Stevens Point's Spencer Johnson. The seven wildcards all finished at least in the top-three in their respective qualifiers. Gregorek and Hawkins competed at the 2013 U.S. Collegiate Championship, and finished in fifth and sixth place respectively.
Friday, June 20 is the knockout round for the collegiate competition, with the top six athletes moving on to the championship round Sunday, June 22. The participants will compete in four disciplines: the single buck
, the stock saw
, the standing block chop
and the underhand chop
. The athletes will use professional rules and professional-sized wood. In addition to becoming the 2014 collegiate champion, the winner will also represent the U.S. on the international rookie team at the World Championship in Austria in November and earn an automatic bid into the 2015 STIHL®

professional athletes launched their lumberjack athlete careers by competing in the U.S. Collegiate Championships, including 2013 Ben Hansen (2013 Collegiate champion), Adam LaSalle (2009), Logan Scarborough (2010), and more.
