STIHL PolyCut™ Mowing Head

Product Description

This is a multi-purpose cutting tool with three thermoplastic blades that are ideal for hard-to-reach places and large areas of high-growing grass. The blades are mounted on bushings and extend when the engine is brought up to operating speed. The white thermoplastic blades are also ideal for trimming around monuments and other solid objects as they don’t mark the stone. The blades are easy to change and some models can also be fitted with flexible nylon line in addition to or in place of the blades.

A variety of cutting heads and blades are available. See Dealer for details.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works perfectly This cutting head is easy to attach, built solid, and cuts through overgrown meadow type stuff like butter. Ran it for over two hours cutting some heavy overgrowth with no blade wear at all.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst product Blade brake and dulls fast went through the blade fast and made my own and works better if they had a better cutting edge like a steel blade that would work better but the plastic is cheap and needs to be replaced with something better

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Bolts keep falling out in second season of use I own an FS90 and I am extremely happy with the power and durability of the trimmer. These plastic blades leave a lot to be desired though. I strongly recommend leaving them soaked in water as instructed, works better that way but still the bolts that hold them in did not hold up. I have about a half an acre around the house with one steep hill I have to trim. These blades were great for that hill and the occasional thick weed that pops up there. It’s just that now in the second season a bolt never quite tightens right and falls out during use! I found it twice, but the third time it’s gone and I’ll need a magnet! Using it without the third blade causes severe vibration and will damage the engine. I feel I need a replacement unit provided to me at no cost since I did nothing wrong and quite frankly the trimming I do with this unit is pretty light in my opinion. Usually only one string for the whole yard!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A bit fragile I do really like the PolyCut head for cutting tall weeds as it easily slices through most of what I encounter, and the head NEVER end up with a tangle of weeds wrapped around it like the string head. However, if there is anything hard hiding in those weeds the blades on this will break, bend, and wear very quickly. This aspect makes it difficult to rely on but the machine vibrates less with this attachment and the sound is quieter/smoother. If you buy one I recommend buying replacement blades immediately--you WILL needs them. Just yesterday I was using it to cut a field of "Rattlesnake grass" and it was fantastic until I hit a low stump and one of the blades broke. I switched to the string head and the drop in performance was huge. The string head immediately tangled on the tall grass and I had to make two passes to avoid constantly untangling the trimmer head. So yes the PolyCut absolutely has its place but it is easily damaged to the point of being unusable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for tall grass I got this head a few years ago for my FS-40C when I was trying to figure out what would work best for what I do. I used it a while for everything I do at the farm and it was okay, but I found that it is inferior by a wide margin to the Autocut string head I've replaced it with for shorter grass and trimming around trees and fences. This head isn't useless though. It shines in tall grass and weeds. The FS-40C turns clockwise, so I take the usual big swath to the right when I cut. This head does an excellent job of cutting tall grass at the bottom and not sucking it back into the cut like a string head does. This means that you can cut the grass and throw it all in a row or pile very easily. This head also does an excellent job of cutting at lower throttle because it needs less power to work than string. The only things I don't like are that the blades could be longer and they wear down too easy on heavier weeds. If they were made of metal this would be incredible.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from CONDITIONAL Recommendation! This cutter head kind of fits a niche between a Sting-Line trimmer & a Cutting Blade. I have used mine occasionally, but it sets on a shelf in my shop because the Cutting Blades better fit my uses. There are specific uses that it will fit just fine.If you are cutting weeds that look butchered or shredded when cut by a String-Line trimmer, this may be for you. Some hollow-stemmed or moisture-laden weeds cut well with this Poly-Cut Mowing Head. However, it will wear down quickly when introduced into woody brush. I had good results when cutting Canadian Thistle & Knapweed.
