FS 131 is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 59.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Detest the new choke system I regret buying an FS 131. The gearbox on my FS 110 failed. It was the second one and the trimmer was 13 years old, so I decided to buy a new 110. However, after I got to the store I thought that maybe I should opt for a larger trimmer. With the wet weather of the past few years the grass and brush is much heavier, and I’m doing a lot more mowing with the trimmer, in areas that have remained too wet for a lawn mower. The new choke system was explained to me and it seemed simple enough. Big mistake on my part. I loathe and detest that system. The manual says to press the fuel pump bulb at least 5 times. Don’t I wish that 5 times were enough. I have now run through 28 tanks of gas, and have found that for semi-reliable starting I need to press the bulb 12 times. I timed the process, 50-60 seconds in 80 degree weather. How long will it take when the bulb is stiff in 40 degree weather? There have been a few times when I the bulb never filled with fuel (noticeable because the bulb is easier to press and rebounds quickly), even with 12 presses. Yet the engine started. Every time I go to start the engine I feel that I should emulate Dorothy, i.e. click the heels of my RedWing boots 3 times and say something like “Please start.” I have not had a successful warm start. Normally when I go out to trim I plan on working for a few hours, especially when I’m at a distance from the house. Twice I have gone through a tank of gas, shut down long enough to refill the tank, and then tried to re-start the engine. Because I had run the fuel tank dry I pressed the bulb 5 times after fuel appeared in the bulb. I hated to do the 12 I do for a cold start. The choke was set to the warm start position. If I did as the manual suggested, cranking until the engine runs, I would still be out in the field. I eventually gave up and returned to the house. The second time I tried this I left the choke knob in the open position but did the bulb presses. Again, the engine would not start. With the FS 110 this was not a problem. I would simply leave the choke open, lock the throttle, and pull the cord. At the moment the warm start is not a big problem because as warm and humid as it has been I really wasn’t eager to continue with a second tank. But that will change as the weather cools. It’s not like I don’t know anything about trimmers. I bought my first Stihl, an FS 90, in 1989. I replaced that with the FS 110 in 2006. So I have been using Stihl trimmers for many years. With all kinds of attachments—the string head, the polycut head, grass blade, brush blade, and power scythe. Until I got this 131 I never had reason to gripe. But I am really dissatisfied with the 131, at least with the starting process. What was so difficult about locking the throttle and setting the chock lever to start, and then opening the chock when the engine started. It was simple and reliable. Maybe I got a bum unit, but I am stuck with it now. I certainly would not recommend buying a trimmer with this starting system unless there was an agreement for a no questions asked return if necessary after the buyer had the opportunity to use it for several tanks of gas. All that being said, please note that I am not unhappy with the performance of the trimmer. My trimmer gets used a lot. And as noted above, with the wet weather it is getting used more often, and under much more difficult cutting conditions. Once the trimmer starts, something I am never sure of happening, it works and works hard. Other than the initial 3 tanks of fuel, the break-in period, the trimmer has usually been operated at full throttle on thick, heavy, generally wet grass and brush. I can’t say that I’ve seen an increase in efficiency of fuel use. The 110 would run through a tank of gas in about 1 hour. I’m getting anywhere from 1 hour to 1 hour and 20 minutes with the 131. The longer run times were in the beginning when I wasn’t running full throttle. I suspect that I haven’t seen much increase in run time because this trimmer is running at full throttle for longer periods of time. As for the anti-vibration system, is there one on the 131? The manual states that the anti-vibration elements should be checked before starting work, but there is nothing in the manual to indicate where these anti-vibration elements can be found. My hands would get tingly when running the 110, but that would usually happen with the 2nd or 3rd tank of gas. That is something that I have not been able to do with the 131.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Bad egg? I love Stihl products they have been excellent dependable tools for me. Ever since early 20’s when logging I’ve owned Stihl they were dependable when you were deep in the woods or at the landing. I currently own a 800 mag blower, ms310 saw, 181 saw and have the ( fs131 that’s when I got disappointed ) I don’t know if I got the bad apple in the bushel or what- it started fine and from idle to 1/2 throttle it doesn’t miss a beat but from 1/2 throttle to full it starts sputtering and the rpm doesn’t get any higher I’ve taken it in twice and I’ve only used it 3x. I use it at home and at church that’s it. That would be like the gas pedal on my car once you have it half way down it doesn’t go any faster and starts missing. They changed the carburetor out now it’s hard to start and the rpm is not as high as the previous carburetor so I just figured they turned it down but it still kinda coughs. I would trade it in on the 240 if they let me. I can’t stand operating a piece of equipment your not happy with. E-mail me Stihl. “ please”.
