    Starts every time!
I had two old trimmers, quality units but worn out. I got tired of pulling, and pulling, and pulling... I have a Stihl chainsaw, and use their equipment a lot with Samaritan’s Purse on disaster cleanup (hard use there!), so it was a no-brainer to buy a string trimmer from my local Stihl dealer. My only issue is with the handle at the balance point. It is loose, allowing the unit to turn upside down when carrying with one hand. A minor annoyance, and pretty easy to fix. The thing has plenty of ... read more power and the supplied string cuts great. Over-all, very happy with it.

    This trimmer is a beast
For the average homeowner with a property size under an acre, this trimmer model is all you'll ever need. You can flip it upside down for crisp edging. I've been using stihl trimmers since I was 16 working at a local state park. The quality and reliability is second to none. Give it a beating and it will keep running just fine. Just bought my trimmer last spring and I'm confidence with proper care and service, I'll easily get 15-20 years of good service out of it, maybe longer.

    Replacement for 25-year- old FS44
My 25-year-old Stihl FS 44 needed a new carburetor, which due to its age, is no longer produced or available. The FS 56 RC-E seemed the best replacement for the old machine, and has several improved features: 1). lighter weight (about 1.5 lbs. less), 2). see-through fuel tank, 3). recoil end-mounted rather than mid-mount (for easier servicing), 4). 180º U-handle more maneuverable than old J-handle, 5). the Easy2Start feature is GREAT! This is a HUGE improvement over the old unit's technology! No ... read more more yanking and frustration getting the engine running. The only reason I couldn't give a 5-star rating is that I miss the Auto-feed trimmer head. I'll get used to the bump-feed over time, but the automatic was easier to operate. And the new deflector is smaller, making more mess. The bigger old one was better.

    Nice machine.
I like the machine,it starts easily and runs good,I have had some problems with the spool that holds the string. At first use I could not get it to advance any string, unless I shut it off and pulled it out by hand, I took it back and they looked at it,then I went home and used it to trim my yard and it seemed to work fine. I think the string was kinked up on the spool and thats why it wouldn't come out,so time will tell, but overall it is a nice piece of equipment.

    Great string trimmer.
I have used Stihl chainsaws for years and this string trimmer is everything I expect from a Stihl product. The trimmer starts on the first or second pull and warms up quickly. The power the engine produces is very good and more than adequate for trimming tall tough Timothy grass. I chose this model because the curved shaft is longer than the FS 40 which makes it more comfortable for a taller person like me to use.

Nice but the auto head is a real pain.
I love Stihl products, especially chainsaws. So, when I needed a new trimmer a dealer I knew recommended the FS 50 trimmer for my needs. Starts great , cuts well when the line is as it should be howevert this auto head doesn't work as it should. I had to tear it apart several timess and getting all that back together is a real pain, just to have the line stick again. Someone mentioned recall for the head unit. That would be a great idea.

    starts great
the string does not hold up at all. This is the stihl string. I put a different brand into it and it did do better. Next I may go up in string size and see if that takes care of the problem. I have 2 of these and the green Stihl string is useless because it breaks too easy.Other than that the trimmer starts and runs better than most trimmers I have used. If the string would not break so easy it would be 5 star and fantastic..............Joe

Easy to use and fairly powerful for what you get
I work for the city I live in, and have had to trim around light poles and signs, as well as in culverts. The trimmer revs high and because of that, it is hard to stop this trimmer even when it's cutting thick grass and ditchweed (the line doesn't stand up to it though). No complaints other than a small fuel tank, but what do you expect? I run it a lot longer than homeowners would ever do so.

You get what you pay for.
After years of buying inexpensive gas string trimmers ever 2 years I decided to give myself a break and get a quality machine. It came down to two highly recommended brands. However, the Sthl had a much more professional look. This SF-56 is the first straight shaft trimmer I have ever used so it took a few sessions to get comfortable with it, but I appreciate the longer shaft; reduces back strain. The ease of starting is one of the most appreciated features. My previous trimmers would start ... read more easily the first 6 months but most would become more difficult as time went on. This Sthl SF-56 has the feel of quality and I expect to get many years of satisfying service out of it.

I have used many trimmers over the last 15 years. I have found that Stihl's have always been the most reliable. This trimmer is fantastic! Light weight, great power, and completely dependable. The easy start is the way to go!. One half pull and the trimmer is at full speed ready to go! Best trimmer I have ever used! I recommended this trimmer to my friend who bought it the next wk. He said the same review to me as well.

My wife is a pioneering woman.
She wanted the EasyStart and the bicycle handles for control. She started at the house with the string head, but getting closer to the woods, some brush was more durable. She switched to the star blade brush knife and took down another acre of heavy, more woody brush. Then she ran into actual trees. So she put on the chisel tooth circular saw blade, and at that RPM it takes out a 2 inch tree in less than a second, and close to the ground. Wow, I really like this machine.
