some issues starting and chain tightening
I admit it I am a total novice. I needed a light use chainsaw for minor tree cutting and firewood. Could not start the thing at first while following written instructions only to be told by Stihl to do something else...essentially the instructions were causing me to flood the thing. Now starts right away. Works like a charm. After many hours of use could not tighten the chain as the "easy to use feature" for chain tightening can't get to work. The plastic knob to unloosen won't unloosen and ... read more feels like it is about to snap off. If I could figure it out I think this will be a dependable saw.

    This is an excellent saw!
I am very impressed with this chainsaw! I am a new home owner, and I just purchased a large load of logs to cut up for firewood (to heat my home). I had been feeling intimidated by how much cutting I had to do. The first day I used my new MS 251 C-BE, I no longer felt at all overwhelmed by my huge pile of oak logs. The saw starts so easily, cuts so quickly, and uses so little fuel that my large job now seems like a walk in the park! I also really appreciate how light and comfortable the saw is ... read more to use, and how easy it is to adjust. I had heard many good things about Stihl chainsaws, so I had very high expectations. This saw has exceeded even my high expectations, and I am very, VERY pleased!

Easiest Chainsaw to start on the planet!
My old chainsaw was just getting to hard to start, not the saw's fault but since I turned 65 I'm not strong enough to pull the chord all the way through the Stihl's start assist is absolutly incredible wind up the start untill it burps pull again and "Voi la" it starts every time no more standing on the handle or throwing the saw to get it to fire up, just two effortless pulls & bang! Hot or Cold I have never had a saw that is this easy to start, I wish I had known about this product ten years ago.

    Fast Cutting and Long Lasting
I can't say enough about this chain. The PS3 chain has been on my in the tree saw for 3 months now. I am saying one chain for 3 months with no touch up of any kind. One of my ground guys used the saw and put it in the dirt a bit. I was super surprised that it was still as sharp as it was. That was sometime in month 2. I have been cutting in ash, maple, red oak, and beech. Just to name a few. I know I should have at least ran a file over it before now but, I just wanted to see how much wood I ... read more could truly cut before it stopped throwing chips. So it lasted 3 months doing commercial tree work. It needs to be sharpened now. Boring smoothness is unreal. This chain sure has saved me a lot of money and time! Its probably the best small saw chain on the market today.

Only Option For Full Chisel (3/8 Lo Pro)
This is, like any other STIHL chain, a good one. It cuts fast being that it is a full chisel tooth. Yes it will still dull quicker than the RM chain but it will cut faster too. The part I totally don’t understand is why STIHL offers the PM chain in a pro “yellow link” chain in the 3/8 lo pro but not a “yellow link” PS. Chain??’ (Honestly the PM chain isn’t listed on line either). Anyway, it’s good for what it is, and I run it on my MS170 to clean up branches, take down the odd very small ... read more diameter tree, and some light bucking work. It works well for that mission. Anything bigger and the MS661 3/8 RS comes out. The chain will not disappoint and will cut quick, but dull quick if ya use it in dirty wood or get into the dirt with it.

    very versatile saw
Light weight, easy access under bushes/brush, operating time on battery is pretty good and can make quite a lot of cuts on a charge. Happy with unit in clearing off a acre plus of heavy/thick brush. It is on the pricey side for a small saw, in comparison to the much bigger/powerful gas powered saws. C.D. Zook

    Tough Little Bugger
I told my husband that I was interested in an electric saw for a couple of reasons, the first being that we have a yard with some pretty stout trees that I didn't feel comfortable using his gas powered saw to trim up with. The second was that I wanted something small enough to put in the back bag of my 4-wheeler to deal with trees that fall across trails etc. without the chain saw being too large or deal with gas/oil sloshing all over the place. This little guy handles all of that. It's user ... read more friendly, light weight and gets the job done. Love It!!

    Perfect Power for its Size
The size of this chainsaw is a bit on the smaller side, but when you need to trim limbs or clean up messes after a storm, it is perfect for the job. I have used it several hours on one charge. The key is to use it for the cut and then stop. Continuous use pulls the battery down faster. However, I have been pleased with how much I get out of the battery. It keeps going, and the last cut is just as powerful as the first.

Excellent Bar Stand Up To Fire!
While I prefer the ES bars on biģger saws, the Rollomatic E bars are best choice on the Farm and Ranch and Homeowner lines. Long lasting quality, lighter weight at a good price. Run E bars on MS 271 Farm Boss, MS 250 and 028s. I got an 028 salvaged from a fire. Still runs strong and the Rollomatic bar and sproket nose run smooth as new even with blistered paint and plastics!!! Get that from a big box saw or imported bar..I don't think so.

    Thumbs up
Good bar. No real complaints about it especially for a it comes with the saw bar. I will be upgrading to ES bar eventually though because why not get the upgrade

    The standard in bars
A great bar that holds up to medium to heavy use well. The standard to measure other manufacturers products. Been using these for years with no issues. None.

Fast Cutting, reliable and safe chain
I agree with other writers, this chain has been given a few bad reviews, but it's a fast cutting, great safety chain. I put about 20 hours in 2 days cutting in maple, oaks, buckthorn and other invasive species (for a scouts Eagle Project) and it cut fast and stayed sharp. I also agree with another reviewer that you might want to to make sure all bumper links/rakes are in spec - I touched it up with the Stihl All-in-one file. The RM3 cuts fast and given the added safety is definitely the right ... read more choice for anyone that isn't cutting 50 hours a week. Keep it out of dirt - please. It didn't lose it's sharpness until a friend that was impressed with my saw wanted to try it. I realized after I looked at his cuts that he'd been grinding it into the dirt a half dozen times while cutting up a large maple (friends!) and that's when I needed to switch chains. I used my RS to finish up the tops of a few large stumps. The RS is admittedly faster, but it's also a full chisel, without the bumper/rake profile that makes the RM3 chain safer. But, the RS is not the chain I'd let other, less experienced (friends) use. Keep the RM3 sharp and you'll appreciate the quality/speed. PS - for safety, don't ever cut with a dull chain, especially when a chain touch-up only takes 10 minutes, or changing a chain takes 2.

    Great all-purpose chain!
This chain came on my MS 271. It has been in use for about a year now cutting dirty, moss-covered, frozen, rotten wood and lots of firewood. The chain only requires an occasional hand filing and is back to throwing chips like new. After a year, the cutters are still about 95%. It should last a long time at this rate (and I bought 3 more spares!) Well worth the extra few dollars over the chain most other manufacturers use. It seems to be sharper right out of the box than other brands as well. ... read more Compare STIHL chain with other brands and you can see the extra effort put into making them.

    Plunge Cutting Plus
Having multiple friends of mine in my life take out pieces of their faces from kickback made me want to go with the low-kickback chain. Being that my saw came with this chain, I cannot compare it to other chains however this chain will cut as fast as my saw wants to cut. Plunge cuts (bore cuts), I have read frequently that you cant do it with a safety chain. BULL. Well let me tell you, I can plunge right through without a problem. Maybe this chain is a little slower but keep it sharp and you will never notice.

A bit heavy, but power makes up for it.
Starts easy from cold, While it is heavy, it takes quite a bit to stall it. I stacked my firewood for bucking and just bucked the whole stack in one pass, instead of one log at a time. 28in bar makes it front heavy, but not having to bend over to cut more than makes up for it all. Vibration dampening is great! even running it without gloves doesn't bother me, even for an hour straight. Only thing I am not clear on is if the bar tip needs to be lubed or not. There's no grease hole for it.

Purchased in 2013 long term review
I purchased this saw sometime in 2013 to use for felling and bucking large logs. This saw is a bit on the heavy side but 5 years later I am still satisfied with it and have cut up a lot of wood with it. Using a sharp chain you can cut through oak and other hardwood with ease and it will keep going long after you are ready to call it quits. My only complaint is that you have to follow the starting procedure exactly or it will flood and you are going to spend some time getting it going. Otherwise ... read more it has been great

    Excellent and Reliable
Excellent choice! I've owned other chainsaws but this is the best by far. The detail in design make it very user The oil/gas caps are great compared to other cap designed; just be careful with the string not to drag sawdust or other debris back in the tank when closing. The chain oil adjustment is very nice and works well. If you follow the owners manual break-in instructions you can't go wrong. Starts very easy every time. I use 93 octane and 50:1. Perfect combo.
