    Love at first sight!
I could not believe how light this hedge trimmer was when I first picked it up. It works beautifully. I cut 32 shrubs, including several hollies and one very large holly and the battery still hasn't quit. These aren't for bushes that are out of hand and need an overhaul, but for shrubs that are kept trimmed every couple of months or so. They are easier to use than my larger Stihl HS45 gas hedge trimmers, which can handle the larger, more aggressive tasks. These will be my new "go to" hedge ... read more trimmers because of their incredibly light weight and how beautifully and easily they cut. I would highly recommend this hedge trimmer. It has an internal lithium battery and a battery level meter as well as a removable key for safety from accidental engagement. The HSA 45 also has adequate length and reach at 20". Another great product from Stihl, the company that never, ever settles for second best. Stihl is #1 for a reason. They never compromise their standards of perfection.

    Nice Upgrade
I had an electrical trimmer and moved to this battery powered trimmer with an extension. Wow, what an upgrade. No more cut extension cords (yes, twice) and fewer trips up the ladder. I was able to perform all low/close/high operations with one trimmer. Yes, it's heavier, but the work was done much quicker, and I dare say was more quite than my old electrical. It is plenty powerful and sharp too. With effort, I could cut through one-inch branches. The battery load isn't all that much. I have ... read more several Stihl battery products and two sized batteries. The power draw was closer to the edge trimmer than the guzzling chain saw and blower.

    Great tool
I'm a landscaper and I bought this tool about 2 years ago. At that time it was relatively new to market and I was hesitant to spend the money required for the trimmer, battery & charger. So far it has been one of the best tool decisions I've made. Works as good as my previous Stihl gas powered hedge trimmer with no starting problems or any other issues related to gas powered equipment. I especially appreciate 0 emissions and low noise! Great job Stihl! P.S. I want to move to the battery ... read more blower & trimmer but so far the run times are limiting. Hopefully that will continue to improve.

    Not just for tall plants
I'm very pleased with the power and run time (AP180 battery). Unless you're a pro, you probably don't need the heavier battery. I was surprised that at least half of my use is at ground level. This trimmer reaches under fences, cuts brush that would choke a residential mower or string trimmer, keeps me "arms length" from potential snakes, and doesn't sling sap from poison ivy or poison sumac. It was able to "chew" through one inch saplings. It also did a great job on our larger shrubbery, ... read more although the tallest shrub still required a ladder due to its 8 foot circumference. I looked at the longer HLA 85, but this model is much easier to handle and is definitely the right choice for 95% of my tasks. I hoped to also buy a handheld hedge trimmer, but all of the ones weighing less than 11 pounds use the AK battery type (not interchangeable with AP). I'm very disappointed in that limitation imposed by Stihl. On a related note, comparing battery performance between tool series should be easier. Some are described in amp hours, some in watt hours, and some not at all. It makes me think Stihl may be hiding something. Bottom line: This is a capable replacement for gasoline systems. Highly recommended.

    Gaslike power without the gas
The power of this is HSA66 is only slightly less powerful than the HS80 and after almost 10 years of the HS80 2 stroke smell I really like the HSA66. After the first hour or so of trimming we were nearly done with the job when I was walking around looking everything over before the blowers started. I saw a bush we missed so I picked up the HSA and while looking at the bush I instinctively pulled the center of the trimmer like I was trying to pull start the HS80. My guys all started laughing and ... read more it wasn't until I looked down I realized I had just tried to "pull start" a battery power trimmer. Ya, its that similar. Batteries are a real option for professional daily use. We are starting to phase out the HS80's and do not anticipate buying anymore HS81's.

This product is highly engineered and has the Stihl quality I expected.
I needed a hedge trimmer that was light, powerful, and of exceptional quality. Since I own several STIHL products and have owned STIHL products for many years I am very confident that the durability and quality are in every one of their products that carry the name. I wanted a battery operated trimmer but did not want the increased weight in the trimmer. I purchased the battery belt and it works just wonderful. The standard battery will trim a large amount of shrubbery without recharging.

This hedge trimmer preformed a lot better than I thought it would.
I bought this trimmer to trim balsams and bushes around the yard. My wife used it for cutting down weeds in her butterfly garden. She wanted to know why I didn't get one sooner. Used it only 4 time so far however, being a Stihl product I expect it to perform well for a long time. It is slick.

    Great to use
I bought this for my blackberry bushes. Cuts through the bushes very easy. Makes my work a lot easier

    Light weight and powerful
This hedge trimmer is light weight which makes it easy to maneuver but it has enough power to get the job done efficiently. Great tool for the male or female gardener!

Great hedge trimmer worth the $
I was going to get the smaller hsa 45, but needed something with a little more power for thicker branches. This was the right choice for 1/4 to 3/8" shrub branches. The battery power is excellent and it charges very quickly. I've never even come close to using up the full battery power. I only wish the blade was a few inches longer to reach deeper shrubs. Pleasure to use.

    Better Than Imagined
I bought this product for home use; 2 to 3 times per year as needed. However, I have a lot of shrubs/hedges, typically a 2 or 3 day job w/ clean-up each time. I also own the Stihl blower and string trimmer (3 years old) which have served me well. Using my 3 year old battery (AP 160) I started trimming and stayed at it for 45 minutes before I took a break thinking the battery probably needed a charge while I picked up trimmings. To my surprise, the battery still had 75% life and charged to full ... read more power in short order using AP 100 charger. Cutting power was as good or better than anything I've used in the past. Loved being able to pull the trigger, trim, release trigger, move ladder (in some cases# trim some more, adjust length, trim some more and never have to stop and restart a gas engine or refill a gas tank. Super convenient! Adjustable cutting bar angle and extension pole length met every need. Very quiet as you would expect. Allowed me to start work early morning before the heat of the day without disturbing neighbors. This is a "Heavy" duty tool which takes arm strength to wield, especially with the pole extended. Weight #to me# indicates quality build; no cheap plastic or flimsy parts. What I expect from Stihl. I expect to use this product for many years. The HLA-85 paid for itself the first time I used it #compared to hiring landscaper).

    Elegant tool
I'm a professional landscaper who's been watching the Stihl battery line for some time. I decided to jump in and buy the HLA 85 as my first battery powered tool purchase. So far, I'm very happy with it! It feels space age and elegant. It's incredibly quiet, the variable speed trigger is great, and my battery (AP 180) still has four green bars on the charge meter even after pruning several small hedges. This is not a light weight tool, and is built with high quality materials; the cutting side ... read more is still almost as heavy as a gas powered unit, but without the gas power head, it is much lighter to carry around overall. I'm very much looking forward to getting the other battery tools, as I feel this is the way of the future especially as battery technology matures.

More than enough power to get the job done
Went with the AP300 battery just to make sure I had plenty of power. Still shows a 3/4 charge with about 2 hours of use. Wondering if I should have gone with the smaller battery for the weight savings. This thing does have some weight to it so you get a good upper body workout when using it. By looking at it and using it, it becomes obvious that this is a well made and serious tool. So great to be able to do tree shrub trimming without getting on a ladder. Took me about 45 minutes to do what ... read more used to take me half of a day. I would recommend.
