When you demand a lot from your chainsaw, having the right saw chain can make a big difference. STIHL saw chains are individually designed for all types of woodcutting and for most makes of chainsaw. Every saw chain manufactured by STIHL incorporates our exclusive, patented OILOMATIC® lubricating feature. And every component is engineered to work together to maximize the use of bar oil.

STIHL OILOMATIC® saw chains feature specially engineered grooves designed to channel oil to critical wear areas. This superior lubrication feature helps extend the chain’s life and reduce the tendency for stretching. Our saw chains are also pre-stretched before leaving the factory, eliminating excessive stretching during the break-in period.

All STIHL saw chains have the same quality engineering and innovative technology that have made our chainsaws famous. We even care about the details others might miss – like smoothing out the microscopic rough edges from the stamping process to reduce premature and improper wear. If it says STIHL, it’s made to last.

STIHL recommends using low-kickback, green-labeled chain and green-labeled reduced-kickback bars on all powerheads.

This colored link indicates that the product has increased risk of kickback injury and is for use only by persons with extraordinary cutting needs and experience and specialized training for dealing with kickback.

Low kickback chain
This colored link indicates that the chain is a low kickback chain. STIHL recommends the use of a green-labeled low-kickback chain.

    Excellent Chain for Experienced Users
I've been running RS chain on my old 041 for 20 years. It cuts extremely fast .It throws large chips, not sawdust like lesser chains. I would not recommend using it on saws less than 3 H.P. It's just too aggressive for lower power saws. Sharpening should be left to those who have the proper equipment and knowledge of square tooth, chisel chain. I've been selling and servicing Stihl products since 1987 and I recommend this chain to all my commercial customers..

    BEST Choice for Multi-Purpose Use!
I've used this chain for years & came back to it when I recently purchased an MS-362 C-M with a 20" Rollomatic ES Light bar. I would call it my preferred choice when trimming limbs on large trees, cutting lengths of firewood, or in other applications where RSF (skip-tooth) is not desirable. Let your teenager cut his teeth with this prior to packing him out with RSF chain! I may resort back to this chain on my MS-661 R-CM with a 32" Rollomatic ES Light bar when Mother Nature says my aging ... read more frame has had enough! This chain is the easiest to dress & maintain.

    Best chisel chain made
This is by far the fastest and best chain I've ever used. I have the MS 291 and this thing eats wood like a madman. The chain is not meant for beginners and you should have quite a bit of skill before attempting it. I use the Dremel tool with the stihl roto bits to sharpen the chain but you have to take your time and make sure your angles are perfect and use common sense and skill. The chain is hard to sharpen if you did not have sharpening skills take it to the shop. I have used stihl products ... read more for over 20 years and in my opinion there the best saws and chains I've ever used bar none. By 1 it will be the best move you ever made and you won't be sorry.

    The chain cuts good
I use it to cut dead oak trees it cuts the trunk by the ground faster then the other chains and cuts through the oak like a knife through butter. One chain usually dulls after cutting an oak into firewood but this stays sharp longer

    fast cutting
I use a ms160 chainsaw for cutting branches and with the micro picco chain it cuts faster than my ms290 chainsaw

PM Chain Upgrade for the MS170 - I’m happy again!
I purchased an MS170 on the STIHL Dealer Days Sale and gave it a run cutting into some small brush in the yard and burning it. The chain that came on it was the PMM chain and the drive links were getting battered so badly by the sprocket that they would not fit in the bar grove due to deformation of the drive link. This caused the chain to throw off the bar and required it to be filed to width again. This happened a few times and I decided to upgrade the chain and bar. The chain I installed was ... read more a PM 63PM-55 and it’s awesome!! Much better kerf size! Much much stronger!! Much better time between sharpening! Much better all around really.. I don’t burry the bar in wood, for me it’s only for cutting small stuff so it perfect in that role, anything bigger and I reach for the MS661... I highly advise upgrading to a .050 Bar groove and dump that anemic .043 groove PMM chain for the .050 groove bar and the PM or PM3/PS3 chains. Made the world of difference in my equipment, but it’s going to take more of the limited power available to pull it through wood so it will bog down if ya get deep with it, but as mentioned, if ya keep it to the basic small jobs ithe MS170 is designed for, then this chain is the perfect upgrade for the smaller saws!

    Perfect chain
Have used this chain for many years. My only complaint is sharpening but it's not bad if the dealer has the proper tools . I am looking to purchase my own sharpening equipment. I loaned the chain to company I work for and I had used it for several hours since was sharpened and it lasted them a month to where they were sharpening every few minutes with their chain. I filed my drags for a little more aggressive cut. Would recommend highly for anyone. I have felled trees, cut firewood, cut dirty and ... read more abrasive things with steel rods and only time I lost teeth was when someone hit the metal rods.

i had a old tree that had been floating around the river for years wash up across my drive, it was about 2 feet in diameter, old farmer said i would need alot of chains, cause those trees in the river have alot of silt in the pores of the wood, we made 1 cut with a new regular high speed saw chain, dulled it right away, 2nd new regular saw chain made it about a 3rd of the 2nd cut, put on the Carbide tipped new saw chain, 26RDS3 81, cut the rest of the tree up, just fine, about 20 feet long, ... read more including the root ball, we broke thru the bottom , hit the river road bed, gravel, sparks flying everywhere, thought that would be the end of that chain, nope, still cutting 3"curls, got home cleaned up saw, the teeth on the carbide chain, looked like brand new. i will be buying only carbide from now on.

    i own five stihl chainsaws
I have ran the safety chains and full comp chains. but as soon as I figure out that I could buy a chain that cut faster and sharpen faster because there less teeth to sharpen. I honestly don't think I would buy a stihl saw that you could not a skip chain. my oldest saw is ten or so years old a ms 310 and still has the orginal bar. I have ran other skip chains but the stihl chain run the coldest on the bar.

The BEST choice for Big Saws with Long Bars!
I've been using this chain for years with 041AVES, 066 Magnum, & MS 661 R C-M saws with 24", 28" & 32" bars. I predominately cut P-Pine, D-Fir, E-Spruce, Larch, & W-Cedar. This chain is the easiest to dress in the woods, especially with fewer bits to dress!

Excellent chain for 25 inch bar
I run this chain on a 362... I use it to mainly cut oak. It does a great job as long as you keep it filed during fuel stops. (As with ALL chains). I won't go back to another chain I got almost a whole season of firewood cutting out of it.

    One tough Chain!!
I picked up a 33RM-72 to use on the downed dirty trees that are scattered about the property in order to keep the RS chains from digging into the dirt or really dulling out the full chisel chains. The teeth are notisanly smaller (width) & obviously different form the RS with a rounded corner but they cut fine and I haven’t noticed any issues with dulling out. It just keeps going and going even in dirty wood. I did notice it’s slightly slower cutting than the RS or RSK chain but not by much. ... read more It also does not seem quite as grabby as my RS/RSK chains but is also not a “Safety” chain either so careful attention should be given especially by “homeowner” to avoid the possibility of kickback. It is a smooth running, easy cutting chain that lasts and lasts. I happy with the performance overall and would recommend it to any chainsaw user!!

    Top notch
The STIHL RM chain is hard to beat. I have tried 3 other brands and there is no comparison. The chain stays sharper longer, and is easily returned to almost new with a few minutes of sharpening. Been running this on a 261CM with an 18 inch bar all fall/winter. Very happy with the performance. I am now convinced STIHL chains are the best. Worth a few extra dollars over the competition. Maintain correct tension and this will be a workhorse for you.

    Good all-purpose chain
Great for frozen, dead and/or dirty oak. Has no problems on other types of wood though either, just excels when you're in hardwoods in my opinion. Takes a bigger bite than RM3(safety chain).
