MS 462 C-M
Lightweight, professional chainsaw featuring the STIHL M-Tronic™ engine management system

Product Description

Meet your ideal business partner, the STIHL MS 462 C-M chainsaw. The STIHL MS 462 C-M was specially engineered for the pro user who desires more power with less weight and thus less user fatigue from their chainsaw in daily forestry work. At just 13 pounds, the MS 462 C-M is the lightest-ever STIHL chainsaw produced in its fuel-powered class. It features an excellent power-to-weight ratio for added maneuverability tested by professionals in the field. The next generation STIHL M-Tronic™ engine management system electronically controls ignition timing and fuel metering. Conveniently, the saw auto-adjusts for changes in its operating environment, such as changes in altitude and fuel quality, for optimal performance. The anti-vibration system is designed for good handling when the MS 462 C-M is equipped with longer guide bars while still reducing vibration which equals less fatigue for the user.

Model Features

  • Reduced-Emission Engine Technology - Caring for Nature
The STIHL Inc. “Caring for Nature” seal identifies its powered products that are more environmentally conscious, producing zero or low exhaust emissions. STIHL Inc. defines “low exhaust emissions” as being cleaner than EPA and/or CARB exhaust emission standards.

  • Pre-Separation Air Filtration System
This time-saving technology boosts the efficiency of the engine’s filter system, doubling the time between air filter cleanings. Air drawn into the engine is first separated via centrifugal force, ejecting the heavier dirt particles before being routed to the air filter. This pre-separation means less dirt to be captured by the air filter, resulting in less frequent cleaning and maintenance.

  • STIHL Quickstop®
STIHL chainsaws are equipped with a chain stopping system designed to reduce the risk of injury in certain kickback situations. It is called a STIHL Quickstop® chain brake. The STIHL Quickstop® chain brake is designed to stop the rotation of the chain if activated by the operator’s hand or by inertia if the saw kicks back with sufficient force. In some working positions, the STIHL Quickstop® chain brake can be activated by inertia, stopping the chain within fractions of a second.

  • Anti-Vibration System
STIHL has developed a system for minimizing the vibration levels of handheld outdoor power equipment. The STIHL anti-vibration system helps reduce operator fatigue and provides a more comfortable working experience.
  • STIHL ElastoStart™
The ElastoStart™ starter handle is an exclusive feature of STIHL. It is a starting grip with a built-in shock absorber that helps reduce the effort when pulling on the starter cord. The ElastoStart™ starter grip noticeably reduces the sudden peak forces (compression) normally felt during cranking. The forces which occur at the grip after the first compression stroke are smoothed out.
  • Decompression Valve
The decompression valve, also referred to as 'deco' or 'deco valve', vents compression in the cylinder for easier starting. The decompression valve temporarily reduces the compression in the combustion chamber during cranking and helps reduce the effort needed to pull the starter rope. It is opened manually and closes automatically as soon as the engine fires.
  • Ematic™ Lubrication System
The Ematic™ guide bar, when used with STIHL OILOMATIC® saw chain, will provide proper lubrication and less oil consumption than conventional methods. The system works because two ramps, strategically placed in the guide bar rail, help contain the flow of oil and direct all lubrication to the sliding faces of the bar and chain links as well as the rivets and driver holes, which in turn can reduce bar oil consumption up to 50%.
  • Side-Access Chain Tensioner
The side-access chain tensioner makes it much more convenient for the user to adjust the saw chain with a bar wrench as opposed to the typical location of the guide bar adjustment screw.
  • Master Control Lever™
The Master Control Lever™ is an easy to use single lever, operating the choke, starting throttle lock and on-off switch. The operator must pull the throttle trigger before moving the Master Control Lever™ to the choke position.
  • Adjustable Automatic Oiler
The Adjustable Automatic Oiler allows the user to adjust the lubricant of the guide bar and saw chain for different bar lengths and cutting conditions.

Important Information

WARNING! The occurrence called “kickback” can cause serious or fatal injury. Always read the instruction manual carefully before using your saw. STIHL uses a green and yellow color-coding system to help you select a powerhead, bar and chain combination that complies with the kickback requirements of ANSI Standard B175.1 (gasoline-powered saws) and §30 of UL 1662/ ANSI Standard B175.1 (electric chainsaws). Ask your STIHL dealer about safe operating procedures and the advantages of the STIHL Quickstop® chain brake, STIHL Quickstop® Plus (Q) additional chain braking feature, STIHL reduced kickback bars and STIHL low-kickback saw chains.

STIHL recommends the use of green reduced kickback bars and green low kickback chains on all STIHL chainsaws.

WARNING! Improper use of any power tool may cause serious or fatal injury. Read, understand and follow carefully the operating and safety instructions in your instruction manual before using such products.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Oh...Yeah..... This saw is a beast. It will rip through red oak like it was pine. It has 20% of the Hp of my tractor. That's amazing. Already put allot of trees through this saw. Been bucking 42"-50" rounds lately. It never fails. Starts promptly. You might think it's heavy - but after the first 4-5 won't notice. Wear a face shield - otherwise those 1/2" chips and shavings will get caught in your teeth as you grin felling those 100 footers. This animal will make you feel 20 years younger. And 30 pounds lighter. Your wife will start calling you 'tiger'. And your kids will start respecting you again. Get the saw.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love the power to weight ratio! I love this saw! I ordered it with a 20" ES Light bar and duro chain. I can't tell any difference in weight between the 462 and my old 039 with regular 20" ES bar. It has tons of power to cut right through anything I've tried so far. My only complaint that I have is with the duro chain. I have that chain on all my other saws and love it. On this saw I cut up a couple little dead branches that fell during a recent storm, I ran it for less than 5 minutes and 8 cuts. When I was installing the scabbard back on I noticed one of the cutters was broke off, I checked the rest of the chain and found 5 more broke. I might have hit the dirt once or twice, but I usually hold the small branches off the ground with my foot. Maybe the saw was not intended for that style of chain. Other than that, it's the best saw I've owned!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast light balanced beast Reluctant to buy a smaller saw I run a 661 magnum for everything starting to wear on me ! So I been reading and waiting and just purchased a 462 from local dealer with excellent staff and maintenance department Four Ways in New Castle Pennsylvania . Unbelievable speed and response in all medium and small wood and pulls 25 inch thru big oak fast and impressive will not pull through the big stuff like a 661 but I didn’t expect it to . But overall maybe my favorite saw I ever handled ! Would strongly recommend as all around saw for everything due to light weight and great speed power combo ! Balance is best I ever expierienced on a saw with a 25 lite on it ! A must try for all serious cutters

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good continuation of a legend I have always liked running the 044, 046 460, 461. I have been looking forward to this saw for years. I recently compared the 572xp and this 462. There were some pros and cons for each but in the end the 462 got my vote since its very different from the previous Stihl 70cc offerings. It has m-tronic, spring antivibe, air injection prefiltration, nice canister air filter, large muffler outlet, easy to maintain with great access once taking the top cover off, and is lightweight, which now that im' a little older is nice to have. Its about the same weight as my original 044 10mm saw. I can't comment on durability since i haven't had it long, but it starts easy, oils the bar great, and easy to maneuver, and rapid acceleration. Its an absolute beast with a 20" bar, almost cuts too fast, so i'm going to get a 25" light bar to balance it out. I do say it is a very loud saw (prob due to large muffler outlet). My few cons are the spark plug is different than previous and its very expensive and it doesn't seem to clear chips as well as previous due to slim clutch cover.. In the end, i know Stihl Chainsaws hold their value very well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful light chainsaw Going from a 40 year old 031 Stihl to this new MS 462 C-M was like night and day. Power was just incredible and truly put a smile on my face from the time I made my first cut to the time I shut it down.Very controllable saw with a 25" bar and 33RS chain. This saw is great and I'm very happy to have researched it and purchased it from Middlefield Lawn and Garden. They had my saw ready to go in a short notice and the people are outstanding to work with.I've went through 10 tanks of gas so far and this saw is just a beast.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Missed the mark So let me say this, the 34 mm stroke and 52 mm bore along with lightweight components give this saw the best acceleration I have ever seen in a chainsaw. It also is a similar weight as most your 60 cc chainsaws. This saw screams with a 20” bar in most conditions. However it does not have the low emd torque of a 461 that has a 36mm stroke and heavier components. So I dont see this as a great 70cc saw....sure itll cut faster than a 362 but not fast enough to make up the fuel burning difference. The 572xp has a 39mm stroke and 48 mm bore with heavier bearings...low end torque is better and this is noticed with any bar over 20 inches. Also the plastic casing is not as heavy duty as a 461 and side cover seems less durable as well. Im sorry Stihl but in all honesty you need to keep saw with more torque around the 14 pound. If I was going to go to a lumberjack contest Id take this saw...if Im going to use the saw in normal working conditions Id grab a 461 or 572. They should make an M Tronic 461 with a slightly longer stroke and slightly smaller bore and my decision of the best new gen saw might of been different. Overall this is not a bad saw I just cant reccommend it because there are better options out there in the price range.
