  • STIHL M-Tronic™
This product features M-Tronic™ (M) - a new generation of Intelligent Engine Management that eliminates the low and high speed carburetor adjustment screws, compensates for dirty air filter and changes in elevation and fuel quality for optimum engine power at all times.

    More information

  • Pre-Separation Air Filtration System
This time-saving technology boosts the efficiency of the engine’s filter system, doubling the time between air filter cleanings. Air drawn into the engine is first separated via centrifugal force, ejecting the heavier dirt particles before being routed to the air filter. This pre-separation means less dirt to be captured by the air filter, resulting in less frequent cleaning and maintenance.

    More information

  • Anti-Vibration System
STIHL has developed a system for minimizing the vibration levels of handheld outdoor power equipment. The STIHL anti-vibration system helps reduce operator fatigue and provides a more comfortable working experience.
  • Decompression Valve
The decompression valve, also referred to as 'deco' or 'deco valve', vents compression in the cylinder for easier starting. The decompression valve temporarily reduces the compression in the combustion chamber during cranking and helps reduce the effort needed to pull the starter rope. It is opened manually and closes automatically as soon as the engine fires.
  • Side-Access Chain Tensioner
The side-access chain tensioner makes it much more convenient for the user to adjust the saw chain with a bar wrench as opposed to the typical location of the guide bar adjustment screw.
  • Toolless fuel and oil caps with retainers
Simply lift the lever and twist the caps to remove or tighten. There‘s no need to use a tool to tighten or loosen.

Important Information

WARNING! The occurrence called “kickback” can cause serious or fatal injury. Always read the instruction manual carefully before using your saw. STIHL uses a green and yellow color-coding system to help you select a powerhead, bar and chain combination that complies with the kickback requirements of ANSI Standard B175.1 (gasoline-powered saws) and §30 of UL 1662/ ANSI Standard B175.1 (electric chainsaws). Ask your STIHL dealer about safe operating procedures and the advantages of the STIHL Quickstop® chain brake, STIHL Quickstop® Plus (Q) additional chain braking feature, STIHL reduced kickback bars and STIHL low-kickback saw chains.

STIHL recommends the use of green reduced kickback bars and green low kickback chains on all STIHL chainsaws.

WARNING! Improper use of any power tool may cause serious or fatal injury. Read, understand and follow carefully the operating and safety instructions in your instruction manual before using such products.

MS 261 C-M is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 89.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from This saw races to get through a log so that it can start cutting the next one. Great power to fuel consumption ratio. Easy to handle. Revs up quickly while cutting. Great saw.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This latest MS 261 CM is amazing. I have had an original MS 261 for six years. It is a great saw.I have been wanting an MTronic one ever since they came out a few years ago. When I held this latest version, I knew it was time. My Stihl dealership is very helpful and a pleasure to deal with.Brought the saw home today and went through a half tank of gas in our woodlot before the MN winter drove back inside. This saw was not phased by the cold at all. It's lighter and has a faster trigger response than my last saw.Very pleased with this saw!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Buy It I didn't think I was going to keep the saw long when the engine stalled five times between cuts on the first tank of gas (dealer supplied fuel). The second tank the engine stalled three more times. The following tanks (gallons) the saw has run nearly flawless. The engine does stall when a significant change in the outdoor temperature occurs from the last use. It seems like the M-Tronic engine management system needs a few cuts to adjust to new conditions. With that said, I really like the M-Tronic engine management feature. I'm not an engine mechanic, so I just want the saw to perform under all varying conditions. And, it does without any manual adjustments. I have a 18 inch bar and the engine is fully maxed when the bar is buried in a trunk of hardwood. All my thoughts of putting a 20 inch bar on this saw have vanished. The greatest feature is its light weight. I have a small saw for limbing, but I have noticed that I use it very little now.The second best feature is the decompression valve. Works very well and the engine starts easily. The button is perfectly located for easy and quick access. The engineers got this one right! This professional saw is worth the premium price over other Stihl saws that cost less.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product is a good saw The 261 saw has improvements over the old 026. Easier to start. The oil and gas fill opening have been improved. The only thing on the oil fill opening, it is a little harder to clean the wood chips off before opening to refill. The air filter has been improved but I never had a problem with the old one. It is a good running saw. I still have my 10 year old 026 and plan to get a kit with all the rubber mounts (if I can find one) and stuff where I can rebuild it. It still runs great just a little hard to start and the mounts are worn out..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This saw elevates my skill level. At 68 years old, and having only owned a few chainsaws in my lifetime, I'm not exactly an "old pro" like a lot of you. Old, but not a pro. But I do know tools pretty well in general. So when two fairly large (20"+ diameter) oaks fell recently, here on my property — and with only an aging Husky saw available (which I like, but, again it's getting old) — I started looking at the Stihl brand just out of interest. The MS 261 C-M was a bit out of my price range, but kept coming up in positive reviews, and I've learned that you tend to get what you pay for. Once I got a look at it in person... the heft, the features, the good looks and all that just sucked the cash out of my wallet! Funny how that is.I've now cut rounds out of the 20" oak trunks (fast, easy), bucked up other wood around a few acres, and done various other jobs around the property (it's powerful, and overkill for most things, but that's sure better than to listen to a chainsaw suffer). I can say I got my moneys worth. It seems to be great saw, and so far I can't say anything bad about it. I also sort of enjoy maintaining mechanical things (up to a point) and this Stihl has a build quality that gives me the confidence that it'll be my friend for a while.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good saw but overheats and quits I haven't used the saw much as it tends to overheat and I can't get it started back up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Big tree versus medium saw Old red oak fell over in storm. Trunk circumference is 99 inches. Diameter is 32 inches. From root flare to first branch is almost 16 feet. Waiting to hear back the sawyer to make lumber out of the trunk and the bigger logs that were limbs. It's been a very able saw so far. It's been taking a cut on each side to cut back the trunk with 18" bar.
