When it comes to logging, farming, land clearing, tree service and big firewood cutting jobs, professionals trust the unique features that make STIHL the #1 selling brand of gasoline-powered handheld outdoor power equipment in America*. And at STIHL, we have a particular fondness for our professional category chainsaws. It’s where we built our reputation in the first place. To help you identify model features, look for these corresponding symbols: C = Comfort feature, E = Easy2Start™, Q = an additional chain braking system, R = wrap handle, and M = STIHL M-Tronic™.

Andreas Stihl developed the first electric chainsaw in 1926 and our first gasoline-powered saw in 1929. And not unlike the early automobiles of the Roaring 20’s, our chainsaws’ essential components – engine, bar and chain – remain familiar, though very much advanced, elements of our original chainsaw. Today, STIHL continues to put a high value on engineering and performance. That is why we custom design and manufacture our own guide bars and saw chains for all our machines in-house. This ensures optimal chainsaw performance in the field.

Best mid size saw in the market
I was sceptical about this computer carb but I got used to it. Read the cold start manual before you start writing reviews guys. I'm an arborist difficult to impress me. I've had mine for over a year now. Over 389 take downs with it. Falling trees I am less fatigue and that gives me more productivity. Bucking on this saw is kind of tricky but the key is to not force the saw. The ergonomic on this saw is great. We'll balanced. Clutch cover is genius. Makes it lightning fast adjustments ... read more or replace the chain. Power is just out of this world. I have dropped oaks and buck them with this saw and never had oil problems nor over heating. Yes live oaks completely dismantled by this saw. Rigging with this saw is heavenly. I have never seen a saw take so much abuse and still starts all the time. My groundsman love it. Best and my only Mid size saws. I run my 261 cm 18" bar full chisel Run non ethanol and stihl mix grey bottles. Stihl bar oil. Great job guys.

This is the first professional saw I have purchased, The fit and function on this saw is great, starts like it should every time. I have used this saw to cut some oak and it chews through it like a big saw, fuel economy is great. I can cut all day with this saw and I know it wont beat me up like a higher cc saw will do. I recommend this product.

This latest MS 261 CM is amazing.
I have had an original MS 261 for six years. It is a great saw. I have been wanting an MTronic one ever since they came out a few years ago. When I held this latest version, I knew it was time. My Stihl dealership is very helpful and a pleasure to deal with. Brought the saw home today and went through a half tank of gas in our woodlot before the MN winter drove back inside. This saw was not phased by the cold at all. It's lighter and has a faster trigger response than my last saw. Very ... read more pleased with this saw!

    Power of a MS290, with weight of a MS250
Awesome saw!!!! I live on a farm and wanted a dependable saw, this is it! I was looking at purchasing a MS250 or a MS290. This saw is the best of both worlds with a lot of extras. First off this saw has much more power than the previous MS260. What I liked was the HP of a larger saw and the weight of the MS250. The other benefits are well worth it such as, A full Magnesium case, a stainless steel muffler, heavy duty air filter, captive nuts for the side cover (cannot fall out they stay with the ... read more cover), and decompression valve. These are just some of the additions you get with going with a PRO series saw. The price is a lot, but after figuring out the pro to this saw it makes sense to step up to this saw.

Happy Pappy with MS 261 20"
Back in early spring I had lighting damage to several trees 30" big white Oak. I had MS250 Stilh chainsaw 18" which I have used for several years and is Still a great saw, but it was not big enough to do the job for these big trees. I went to my Homestead store in Cleveland Tennessee and checked out the New saws.and with the help from Mr Davis it did not take long to decide what saw I needed and the good people at Homestead did jut that. They showed me the MS 261 professional 11.6 lb 50.2 cc ... read more (3.06 cu. in.)... which they pointed out the weight difference in this saw compared to the bigger 13 lb saws and with the power of same as other pro saws this was the saw for me. This a great saw cuts through 30' oak with ease and handles great the less weight is just what Pappy needed one great "BAD BOY SAW" thanks again Homestead of Cleveland for helping me select the right saw. Replacing MS250
This would be our third Sthil saw. As per usual they start reliably and run like champs. Unfortunately, I didn't clean the saw and wore a hole through the plastic body and caused an oil leak. Replaced with a MS 251 C-BE for two months. Found the new 251 C-BE to feel cheap compared to the older saws, power was better, but the chain tensioning and mount felt flimsy. Sold the MS 251 C-BE to a friend who has a much smaller yard and need and bought the MS261. It is simply amazing how much better the ... read more MS261 is compared to the Farm and Ranch saws. The power to weight ratio makes this saw so much better to work with.

Like a hot knife in butter.
As a timber farmer here in the PNW, I have been running saws for almost 30 years, and this is the best Stihl that I have ever used. My old 066 used to vibrate so much that after 4 hours of use I could not feel my hands. No more. This saw has a very much improved isolation system and even more power. My dealer told me to be careful with its fuel, and I have not had it long enough to comment. But I bought the Stihl canned gas just in case I give the chainsaw work a break for a few months. Want the ... read more best? Spend the money and get this saw.

A great replacement for the MS660
This saw lives up to everything I expected it to be and more. Being next to the biggest saw Stihl makes,it's heavy and powerful. I've owned 2 MS660's and ran them extensively. The new MS661 has them beat. Uses less gas, has less vibration, starts easier, power delivery is more consistent, an overall pleasure to run. As long as it continues to perform this good I have no regrets about my purchase. Also, a shout out to my Stihl dealer. Brown's Supply in Acme Pa. Great guys to do business with.

    Exceptional Saw on Every Front
Equipped with a 20" bar, this saw is definitely not for the inexperienced user - tons of power and extremely handy for its size. It's been exceptionally reliable. I have never had an issue with cold or warm starts - it always does exactly what I ask of it... extremely well. I've tried it with up to a 28" bar - never an issue with power. I prefer the shorter bar for maneuverability.

    Great product for the money.
Just picked up this saw today and used it. It has great power with the 25 inch bar on it. This was my second time buying a Sthil product and the dealer recommendation of this saw was well worth it. Great saw for the the pro or homeowner who wants a good saw. My only complaint is the plastic handle transfers vibrations a bit more then i would like. Other then that the saw is built excellent. My favorite feature is the retained bar nuts in the side cover. If anyone has had a bad day because of a ... read more lost nut like I had, then your enjoy this.

Absolutely love this saw and recommend buying it if your torn between this and something cheaper
I bought this saw the day after hurricane Sandy struck the east coast, due to the fact we lost a couple thousand pine trees that were planted in the 60's and 70's. After a day of cutting pines with my 026 i went out and bought this and am I ever pleased with the saw, it cuts so much faster, and easier its not comparable to the other saws we were running. Back to my summary, if your looking at this saw and i would presume the MS-291 would be the comparable homeowner grade saw spend the extra ... read more money its well worth it. this saw is amazing the only thing that i would advise getting is both a 20 and 25 inch bar and adjust your oil setting! I have put around 220-240 hours on this saw and it has never skipped a beat short of sharpening the chain. Also drop that low kick back green box chain and head strait for the yellow box it makes this thing cut even faster. Overall I would recommend this product to anyone that could handle carrying it around all day (you get used to it after a week or so) it is a bit heavy but it cuts like no other in its displacement class.

    Excellent Firewood Saw
This is my "go to" saw when cutting firewood. I have cut around 25 full cord of wood with this saw since buying it new in the fall of 2009 at Doug's Small Engine in Mount Pleasant, MI. It has never had even the slightest issue, always ready to jump into service at a moments notice. Best feature overall is the anti-vibe spring system, this is a very smooth saw to run. Power is reasonable, you will have no trouble using a 20" bar, a 25" is definitely pushing it on a 60cc saw. My only gripe it the ... read more air filtration, obviously Stihl agrees and has fixed the issue on the newer saw models (MS261/461). Although I have many chainsaws, if I had to have only one, it would be the MS362 without question.

    Easy to start, very dependable.
I have been using Stihl saws for years. My bigger saws were the O46 and the O66. Both are great saws. I recently purchased the 880 with a 41 inch bar, thinking it would have around 1/5 more power than my O66 for cutting through bigger logs. I was disappointed in the power with the longer bar. I ordered a 30 inch bar and chain to try and get the cutting speed where I had expected it. It did cut faster, but for the money I would stick with the O66 (now the 660).

    The ultimate power saw
I purchased the MS880 Magnum new in 2007 with a 36" bar for my tree service. I started off using it for firewood and to supply power to a 60" Granberg MKIII Alaskan saw mill. I have sawn several thousand board feet of lumber with this saw and felled dozens of large trees. The saw mill loads the engine when making a full width cut, but the saw powers through. My only complaint is the air filter. It requires constant cleaning. I would like to see a more efficient pre cleaning system to extend run ... read more time between filter cleanings. This is also a heavy saw, but it performs well in large log cuts like no other saw.

    Great power to weight ratio
Saw is great once you figure out the M-Tronic system. I am still wondering if Stihl has quite figured it out. I love not having to tune the saw in the field. Overall it is a great machine. I cut 3 cords of pine in just a few hours and that was with the green safety chain. Saw has alot of power for the weight. I will likely get the 25" bar so I dont have to bend over so far for limbing as I am 6'3". I really wish Stihl included more information about calibrating the MTronic system for altitude ... read more change and temps. I live at 8000 feet and cut up to 12000 feet. The saw needed to idle for a while at each spot. Glad i brought the old 029 to limb while it warmed up.

    My favorite saw!
I have owned this saw for a year now with an estimated 75 tanks of fuel. This replaced my MS280 Farm Boss I used for 15 years. Great power, always starts on 4th pull and I have never had any issues with starting cold, warm, or hot. I had the timber harvested off my 100 acres and I needed a powerful saw to start my firewood operation. I love the weight of this saw, though I might spoil myself with a 261 for some deeper woods work. Great product and very happy I don't have to make any carb ... read more adjustments - the saw just rips.

    Last saw you'll ever buy!
I've had this saw for about 5 months and I have to say I have no complaints. I use this saw for about 3-5 hours every day and it's the perfect saw. One of the main reasons I bought this saw was not only for the power, but for the curved handle, it offers so many different ways of cutting and if you're in a tough spot it's super convenient. This saw can take on any tree you throw at it. Yes, it's pricey but all STIHL is because of the quality behind the name. Like any big saw it is fuel thirsty, ... read more so get a 5 gallon gas can instead of a 2.5
