Model Features

  • STIHL M-Tronic™

    More information

  • STIHL Quickstop®
STIHL chainsaws are equipped with a chain stopping system designed to reduce the risk of injury in certain kickback situations. It is called a STIHL Quickstop® chain brake. The STIHL Quickstop® chain brake is designed to stop the rotation of the chain if activated by the operator’s hand or by inertia if the saw kicks back with sufficient force. In some working positions, the STIHL Quickstop® chain brake can be activated by inertia, stopping the chain within fractions of a second.

  • IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor
The IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor is designed to automatically adjust the air/fuel ratio when the air filter becomes restricted or partially clogged and maintains the engine’s correct RPM. IntelliCarb™ uses air from the clean side of the air filter to control the diaphragm and flow of fuel. As the air filter becomes dirty and less air is available for the carburetor, the IntelliCarb™ system adjusts the fuel flow to compensate for the decrease in air flow. This is in contrast to typical carburetors that utilize this air from the “dirty” side of the air box.
  • Ematic™ Lubrication System
The Ematic™ guide bar, when used with STIHL OILOMATIC® saw chain, will provide proper lubrication and less oil consumption than conventional methods. The system works because two ramps, strategically placed in the guide bar rail, help contain the flow of oil and direct all lubrication to the sliding faces of the bar and chain links as well as the rivets and driver holes, which in turn can reduce bar oil consumption up to 50%.
  • Side-Access Chain Tensioner
The side-access chain tensioner makes it much more convenient for the user to adjust the saw chain with a bar wrench as opposed to the typical location of the guide bar adjustment screw.
  • Master Control Lever™
The Master Control Lever™ is an easy to use single lever, operating the choke, starting throttle lock and on-off switch. The operator must pull the throttle trigger before moving the Master Control Lever™ to the choke position.
  • Adjustable Automatic Oiler
The Adjustable Automatic Oiler allows the user to adjust the lubricant of the guide bar and saw chain for different bar lengths and cutting conditions.
  • Built-in retractable carry ring
The built-in carry handle makes it convenient and easy to maneuver in and out of trees.
  • Top handle (T)
The top-handle model is specially designed for in-tree professional use only!

Important Information

WARNING! The occurrence called “kickback” can cause serious or fatal injury. Always read the instruction manual carefully before using your saw. STIHL uses a green and yellow color-coding system to help you select a powerhead, bar and chain combination that complies with the kickback requirements of ANSI Standard B175.1 (gasoline-powered saws) and §30 of UL 1662/ ANSI Standard B175.1 (electric chainsaws). Ask your STIHL dealer about safe operating procedures and the advantages of the STIHL Quickstop® chain brake, STIHL Quickstop® Plus (Q) additional chain braking feature, STIHL reduced kickback bars and STIHL low-kickback saw chains.

STIHL recommends the use of green reduced kickback bars and green low kickback chains on all STIHL chainsaws.

* The actual listed guide bar length can vary from the effective cutting length based on which powerhead it is installed on.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Junk I am a professional arborist in GA. I have used Stihl products for years. I have owned this saw for one year now. This saw is a piece of junk compared to its ancestors. The saw is easy to start, however it will not stay running like it should in the canopy. The saw will sometimes cut off in the middle of a cut, or cut off when the throttle is released. My dealers have made the appropriate repairs to try and make it run properly. However, it just will not hold up to the old 200, as far as performance. I am asking Stihl to please engineer another saw that performs better than this one.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Power to wight is amazing I use this saw everyday. The dependability is unmatched. It is light, quick to start, and is powerful. The design of it is fantastic as well. Easy to adjust as well as work on.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great saw but cannot handle South Florida Heat I own a tree service in South Florida and have been using this saw and its predecessors for over 20 years. This series of climbing saw has always been the most reliable and Powerful but in the last few years they just cannot stand up to working in the hot South Florida Summers. I would recommend this saw for anyone to use in cool climate areas but until design changes are made the song has a very short lifespan (1 -3 months) in hot climate States. Stihl offers a filter screen accessory to help with this problem but it doesn't the saw will overheat and suffer cylinder damage no matter how clean the cooling fins are kept.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Warning: MS-201 TC Performs well when operating; however, very difficult to start. Often, it will not start. Does not idle without shutting down. Impossible to re-start when hotIf you are lucky and manage to start the saw, the saw rarely idles without shutting off. Once the saw is hot, it will never re-start. Had it to Stihl dealer three (3X's) times for this issue. Carburetor replaced twice (2X's) under warranty. The issues still persists and it has never been resolved. What's unique is that I own two (2) Stihl line trimmers, one (1) Stihl pole saw, one Stihl (1) hedge trimmer, one (1) Honda line trimmer, and one (1) Echo blower all which have performed exceptional. The Stihl chainsaw is the only piece of equipment that has this issue. Finally had enough of its poor reliability, destroyed the saw, left it at the dealer.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didn’t make it a year. Got an email saying I had purchased our 201 a year ago. Well it’s not in use anymore. Took the saw in a few times for repairs but can’t seem to keep it running. For a High end saw it should last longer even with daily use. We are a professional tree service and take care of our equipment. This saw has been a disappointment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This saw is AWESOME I purchased a 201T about 5 years ago and just purchased another 201TC recently. These powersaws are absolutely incredible, I am retired and do some volunteer work with the Texas Baptist Men and work / play in the woods. We have 110 acres of land that needs lots of attention. I am not a tree surgeon and I know that this is an arborist saw, but if you want a saw that is well balanced and will work all day long, then this is the saw for you. I use only Stihl Carbide chains on all my saws, they don't get dull, therefore they don't get hot and stretch. Yes the 201TC is pricey, but you get what you pay for....Thank You Stihl for another great product....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very satisfied This is the best climbing saw on the market. I've used 5 different 201 saws and they were all great. I've also used a rebuilt 200 and I thought the 201 was better, even though a lot of die-hard guys that have been in the business for awhile claim that they miss the 200. I've even seen a 201 function properly after being driven over with a 5000 lb vehicle . The top handle was cracked and needed to be replaced but nothing else was damaged. Perhaps I was lucky, but these are tough saws.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from There must’ve been a bad batch!? Reading these bad reviews just makes me feel thankful that I have had zero issues with the saw... I am only a part-time arborist, but I use the saw all the time around the house cleaning up a little stuff and processing firewood. In fact one time icefishing my auger would not start. It was -32 with the windchill that day. Fortunately I had the 201tc in my ice shack. She started right up and ripped through 12 inches of ice no problem! Only downside was it completely froze before I had the chance to cut another hole lol. The saw is super expensive, but so far it’s been worth it!
