    Great saw for a homeowner!!!
Bought and used my first new Stihl MS170 chainsaw today, LOVED IT!!! Great saw and easy to use. Thought i had to start it like old style saws and it wouldn't, so I read the book and found it was way more simple to start. 3 pulls cold and started right up. I'll be buying an FS 56 RC-E trimmer in the very near future.

    Awesome little machine.
I bought the MS 170 approx. two years ago just for occasional use. I bought a 6 acre farm one year ago and ever since then, I have been using the chainsaw religiously.. I use it to cut down big trees, brush, etc. It has completed every job I have started. It has started on every pull, the only con is the gas tank is too small... This is like the little train that could, it just does it. Now I am in the market for something bigger and stronger. I am looking at the MS 250. I strongly recommend this chainsaw...

    MS 170
MS170 I overwork this saw on 5 acres of woods, cutting down oaks trees, trimming limbs and cutting firewood. Has never failed me.

Light weight and tons of power - very reliable
I have used this saw to cut down several trees in the 4-6inch size without issue. It has fired up every time I needed it, and ran particularly well in cold weather. I find the light weight is awesome for getting the job done. I am extremely pleased with this saw and am glad I chose to go with it. I really cannot emphasize enough how solidly built this saw is, it has handled everything I have thrown at it with ease.

    used it for everything
I bought this saw three months ago for a small tree cutting service I run. So far I have used this saw to cut a red oak from the top down, I have cut down about a dozen dead trees with it and often used it to limb. the saw AV is great, and the weight and power ratio are good. the saw is easily maintainable by anyone and the 14 inch bar is great for tight spaces. this saw has earned a place next to my larger saws.

    Excellent starter saw
This saw is amazing. It's the first chainsaw I have purchased and have cut a full cord of wood with it already no problem. Easy to use chain tensioner, gas and oil caps and very easy to clean. A little loud but no complaints. I have cut trees up to almost 3 feet in diameter no problem. Of course, the bigger the diameter, the longer it will take to cut through. But for trees about a foot in diameter, this saw cuts through them like butter. Very easy to start. Uh don't know what else to say but I ... read more highly recommend this to any homeowner who owns alot of property with forest.

Not as great as I expected, but still a good saw
Main complaint is owner's manual stated saw was set up at the factory. Saw kept dying once engine was warm. Would crank right up and idle, but as soon as you make a cut and release the trigger saw would die. Solved this problem by increasing the idle speed, but not sure this is the best fix but it worked. Now the saw gets poor gas mileage, spend as much time refueling as cutting. Also seems a little underpowered and slow when I compare it to my poulan. Bought this stihl as a replacement for my ... read more poulan I was having trouble with expecting a " step up" in quality and performance. So far it's been more like a lateral move, not any better or worse. Not a bad saw, just not what I expected.

Works for small jobs! Easy on wallet
I rarely use a chainsaw, but when I do I need a good one to back me up. This one is a good one for a great value. I will upgrade to bigger one but its better than the 170 for a few extra bucks. Does use ALOT of bar oil and mix. Prepare to refill and refill and refill

    easy to use
went thru 5 tanks of gas so far. so far so good. starting is great as long as you follow procedure, which is pretty simple. cuts and handles better than my old saw. following the on line videos made for a better understanding and easier use of the saw. so far so good.

    Good product
Got this saw 2 weeks ago. Full tank of mixed gas and went into cutting. Half tank through the saw and it stalled and wouldn't start nomore. So I took it back to dealer and they told me that I flooded it. How? I didn't do any adjustments. They started it up and it ran fine without no adjustments(Dealer had no clue how to fix what's causing it to flood). Next day it wouldn't start up when its cold (had choke on for 2 pulls) so I went to pulled the spark plug out and it was soak wet. Went to read ... read more the handbook manual and readjusted the carb as it said to factory specs. Now it runs and cuts perfectly fine now. Other than that I'm liking it so far. I'll see how long this saw makes it through.

Starts, runs and cuts great but the bar is constantly loosening.
I love how easy it is to start! Only 2 or 3 pulls cold and 1 or 2 warm. This saw has plenty of power but the bar tends to loosen quickly.

    A strong mid-sized saw, great all-rounder
I have a little Husky 338xpt arborist and a big heavy Husky 61 with a 24" bar and got the mid-sized Stihl MS250 with an 18" bar to be a lightweight all-around utility infielder. After using it extensively for one day, running several tanks of gas through it, I like it a lot and expect it to be my go-to saw most of the time now. It's lightweight and surprisingly powerful. It's a good size to be extremely versatile. It easily cut through green oak trunks as thick as the saw's bar, but it's ... read more small enough to be nimble and easy to maneuver for limbing. It's comfortable in the hands, even after several hours, not tiring. It can be a little finicky to start, but it's not hard once you get to know its idiosyncrasies. For this reason, it may not be the best choice for those without an intuitive "feel" for such things, but it is a good choice for those who have "the touch." I can't speak to its durability, since it's still new, but it does seem reasonably well made.

You get what you pay for.
My Stihl is a very good tool. I've had it a little over a year. Had three other brands which were not quite as good. When I first got it, I could not get it to start. Did just what the book said. Took it back to the store and the salesman showed me how this unit starts. Nothing like the manual. Starts every time and runs like a champ. Cuts through wood like it's butter. To start the saw, you want to put it on choke for one pull only. Kick it up one notch and it starts right up. Very easy to use ... read more and maintain. The chain oiler work really good.

    Wrong tool for the job.
This saw is great, it is dependable and does exactly what it expected. The problem was me."I needed a stronger saw", and overestimated it's ability, as advertised. Therefore, I use this saw as often as posable. Anything bigger, I go bigger.
