    ms170 review by WCLaub
I bought this saw 2 months ago and used it for some lot clearing of juniper trees (6). Worked fine, likely a little light-weight for the task, but it cut well. I do wish it had quick connects for all fills like on the chain tensioner but i think it was an older saw i purchased in inventory. I saw one at another dealer later that had such quick connect oil and gas caps.

    The chainsaw works fine
Just bought the ms170 a few weeks ago and the staff demonstrated how to start the saw. When I got home I used the saw for about an hour, off and on intermittently and it ran and restarted well. Two days later I filled the fuel tank with Stijl premixed gas and oil (50:1). I can’t get the saw to start again. I will be removing the spark plug and checking to see if it’s fouled, if not I’ll be taking the saw back for a refund or replacement!!

Great light saw for cleaning pond and limbing
I use this saw to clean around our pond, out home and limb trees when me and my dad are cutting firewood. I use trufuel in it and it runs like a top. Also i removed the spark arrestor screen and it helped it with a little more power. My dad cuts with a 290 and on smaller stuff he wants to use my 170. Going to get a 261 soin since my dad is getting older and cant cut as much. I hope the 261 is as reliable as this 170.

    Truly is an "Easy Start"
Fed up with my old chainsaw, that failed within hours of first using, despite my constant maintenance and adjustments, I decided that a Stihl was the direction to go, both from first hand experience with my neighbor's Stihl saw, AND from word of mouth. This saw has performed seamlessly, and it cut thru a 20" Live Oak tree like it was butter. It took less than an hour to buck the whole limb, which weighed several tons, and I didn't have to adjust the chain even once during it's break-in period.

Nice lightweight unit, easy to start and goes through wood easily
I've bought many Stihl products, and wanted a chain saw that I could start without assistance. I am woman that could use a little more upper body strength. I researched to find a chain saw that would accommodate the rural homeowner, one that would be lightweight, easy to start and had an excellent reputation and repair record. This particular unit came up as a candidate. Going through the reviews, I pulled the trigger and purchased this unit. The sales staff tested the equipment, and gave me a ... read more demo of how to start, operate, and do adjustments when necessary. When I got home, I looked through the manual, then went outside and started it up (started up immediately). The saw went through a 12 inch pine trunk like butter. I then used it to cut up some white oak and various wood logs. The saw never felt too heavy, and was easy to maneuver. This machine cuts through wood very easily, and I look forward to using it year round for landscaping maintenance and storm clean up.

    Open Heart Surgery
After my open heart surgery I found it very difficult to start my old chain saws. So off to the Stihl dealer, I came home with this saw and could not be happier, I have used it for over two years for cutting trees to keep my property neat. If you require a saw with easy start capability, then this is a very dependable saw to use.

Easy Starting, Nice Power, Good Balance, Relatively Light
I'm on tank 3 and so far and I've been pretty careful during the initial break in but the saw has been as advertised. The easy start feature is nice when you get use to it and the saw does a good job trimming and cutting through moderate sized timber. The tool-less quick chain tensioner is a plus as well. I looked at several competitor saws and seriously at one other major brand. The Stihl reliability, durability, service reputation and the 211s features were the final determining factor. This ... read more saw is a nice light/medium duty small saw and I'd recommend it as a home owner or ranch hand saw

Great saw EZ Start is not so easy.
I purchased this saw 2 years ago for small clean-up jobs. The power and quick chain adjustment tool are awesome. The EZ start on the other hand is a pain. I have had to replace my pull cord due to people using the saw and pulling on it like a normal pull string. The amount of force needed to "wind" the ez start system IMO is not much less than it would take to pull this small saw in the first place. Maybe this would be good for someone very elderly. My 70 year old father used this saw last week ... read more and wanted to throw it away because he was not used to the ez start system. Everything else about this saw is awesome.

Nice easy adjustment features but could use more reliable chain oiler
At times chain locks up while not cutting with the manual chain brake not on. Must lock and unlock the chain brake several times to free up the chain lock and allow the chain to move freely again. Not a major issue but rather frustrating after it happens a few times. Also seems to lack proper bar lubrication some of the time even after verifying proper vent valve operation and clean oil pathways. Other than those issues, it starts, runs and operates well. The tool-less chain adjustment ... read more and easy start are must have features, in my book.

    awesome saw!
I purchased this saw this week with a 16inch bar, couldn't ask for a better saw. i don't cut trees daily, so this was the ideal choice. i had a large peacan limb fall out of the tree. it was up to about a foot in diameter and aprox. 20-25ft long. the saw handled flawlessly and didn't use much gas, or oil. Cut like a hot knife threw butter. if your just going to use a saw every once in awhile, then i highly recommend this one. no question, stihl makes the best saws out there.

A great saw at a big box store price
Bought this saw 2 years and about 6 gallons of fuel ago as a limber saw to relieve the ms291 from light duty work. Well, the ms171 as been used a lot where the bigger saw should of been used(didn't feel like cleaning two saws). I can go on for awhile about how great this saw is. The biggest reason for this review is for the folks looking at a big box store saw, this saw is worth the very few extra dollars over the big box store chainsaw. I have had them saws and you will not regret buying one of ... read more these. Great power, very light, easy on fuel and my wife doesn't mind using this saw. Happy wife, happy life! p.s. we heat our home with wood, so poor performing saws are no longer tolerated.

    Great little saw.
I am a disabled veteran that heats with wood. I needed a saw with plenty of power, but light enough that it didn't kill my back. I had 2 saws, a Farm sized 455, and a 435. The farm saw was just too heavy, and was more saw than I needed, and the 435, was on its 3rd carburetor, and still wouldn't run right. I didn't have a warranty on neither, so I decided to get a new saw. The MS 171, is the perfect size for getting up a load of firewood, lightweight, easy to start and sufficient power to do the job.

    Worth it
Being a long time Stihl product user (as well as my main chainsaw) I wanted something smaller, lighter but still a real chainsaw. Went back and forth between the MS180, the MS180C, MS211 and the MS170. I picked the MS180 as I think it fits my bill perfectly. Can't see anything I'd change on the saw, can be a bit tricky to start but once you understand the saw it's not a problem at all. I have an old 012AV that just was to worn out and needed replacing, this saw walks circles around it. My big ... read more (bigger I should say) is my MS270... they both work great together. Cutting the bigger stuff with the MS270 and limbing/etc with the MS180. The MS180 is an all day saw, not so much with the MS270.

    good power
I have been using professional saws for nearly 20 years. This little saw has a good amount of power for its size. Its a small saw but I have a 360 Pro and a Stihl 660 that can do the big work. I like the light weight And it cuts well. I am not personally a fan of the soft start though it works fine. It feels like an option for something to break and I just have to get used to it. It does start right up. It is quite nice for starting a saw while in a tree. Overall a good buy.

Good little saw for light tree work.
This saw has good power for a small package. The saw is light and easy to handle. Saw has the start assist so starting is a breeze. Also has the new chain tensioner that requires no tools, which is very nice. Have not had the saw long enough to know how dependable this feature will be but other Stihl products I have purchased have been extremely reliable. Price was right making this a very good bargain for the homeowner.

    Been great so far!
Bought this 1 month ago. Running pure gas, (no ethanol) after 5 tank fulls with zero complaints. I've been running a saw for close to 20 years and was hesitant to buy a non-professional grade saw. I am pleased with the power of this saw, and it's been worked well for the short time of owning it. I dont regret buying it for one second, great home owner saw! If you want to avoid the restart issues others are having, only run ethanol free gas. But what do I know, I'm just some guy in a truck...

    Excellent saw for the price
I have a farm and wanted a saw that is light to use for trimming back trees along fence rows. This saw fits this need like a well tailored suit. I use ethanol free 89 octane gas with Stihl ultra 2 cycle oil and Sea Foam. It starts great and has plenty of power. Easy on gas. Some of the bad reviews on this saw I think are operator error such as cheap, dirty, or old gas.If you use cheap gas you need to use a good additive to keep gas from going bad. Some are do to exceeded expectations of what the ... read more saw was designed for like, you want a light saw with big fuel capacity, but more gas adds more weight or your cutting trees that you need a bigger saw for. Another issue is not following the starting procedure. I also have a outdoor wood burner. In 2014 I bought a Stihl ms 311 it's been an excellent saw also.

Starts Great, Runs Great, Cuts Great
I had an old 025 and needed a new saw. I bought the MS251 at the local Ace Hardware. Upon getting it home I had a hard time starting the saw and kept flooding it. I read the manual about starting and did exactly like it said and now it starts great, cold or hot. I use the saw to cut firewood for my wood boiler and it does a great job. I have used about 10 tanks of fuel so far and have had no problems. I do wish I would have bought a bigger saw as some of the wood I cut is pretty big for the ... read more MS251. Overall great saw once I followed the starting procedures in the manual.
