Model Features

  • Reduced-Emission Engine Technology - Caring for Nature
The STIHL Inc. “Caring for Nature” seal identifies its powered products that are more environmentally conscious, producing zero or low exhaust emissions. STIHL Inc. defines “low exhaust emissions” as being cleaner than EPA and/or CARB exhaust emission standards.

    More information

  • Pre-Separation Air Filtration System
This time-saving technology boosts the efficiency of the engine’s filter system, doubling the time between air filter cleanings. Air drawn into the engine is first separated via centrifugal force, ejecting the heavier dirt particles before being routed to the air filter. This pre-separation means less dirt to be captured by the air filter, resulting in less frequent cleaning and maintenance.

    More information

  • Anti-Vibration System
STIHL has developed a system for minimizing the vibration levels of handheld outdoor power equipment. The STIHL anti-vibration system helps reduce operator fatigue and provides a more comfortable working experience.
  • Decompression Valve
The decompression valve, also referred to as 'deco' or 'deco valve', vents compression in the cylinder for easier starting. The decompression valve temporarily reduces the compression in the combustion chamber during cranking and helps reduce the effort needed to pull the starter rope. It is opened manually and closes automatically as soon as the engine fires.
  • Side-Access Chain Tensioner
The side-access chain tensioner makes it much more convenient for the user to adjust the saw chain with a bar wrench as opposed to the typical location of the guide bar adjustment screw.

Important Information

WARNING! The occurrence called “kickback” can cause serious or fatal injury. Always read the instruction manual carefully before using your saw. STIHL uses a green and yellow color-coding system to help you select a powerhead, bar and chain combination that complies with the kickback requirements of ANSI Standard B175.1 (gasoline-powered saws) and §30 of UL 1662/ ANSI Standard B175.1 (electric chainsaws). Ask your STIHL dealer about safe operating procedures and the advantages of the STIHL Quickstop® chain brake, STIHL Quickstop® Plus (Q) additional chain braking feature, STIHL reduced kickback bars and STIHL low-kickback saw chains.

STIHL recommends the use of green reduced kickback bars and green low kickback chains on all STIHL chainsaws.

* The actual listed guide bar length can vary from the effective cutting length based on which powerhead it is installed on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Saw I bought this saw after reading many reviews on the internet and talking to alot of different people. It has very good power and cuts better than any saw I have ever owned or used. The large chain makes quick work of larger trees and will even rip cut when necessary to split extremely large pieces in halves or quarters. I highly recommend this saw to anyone who cuts alot of wood.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This has all the power I need. Much more juice than some other saws of similar size. After years of burning up many saws I now bought the GOOD one. This new saw does justice to the Stihl history I have always heard and read about. It is tougher, smoother and has more power than other saws of the same size. In addition to that, the sales person from Kabelins' from Michigan City was remarkably trained and knowledgeable regarding Stihl products; that is a major plus when a company trains the seller to that degree.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Favorite Saw Just purchased the MS 311 with a 20" bar. I have been using the MS-180 which I really like but was running out of power on cutting up some larger trees, 20-30" Sugar Maple. I knew the MS-180 wasn't designed for that chore, even though it did labor through some of it. I went with the MS-311 versus some of the other models as it appears to be the least expensive, or smallest engine size saw Stihl makes that offers a 3/8" chain. Holy smokes!!! I have been using a chainsaw (homeowner and as a kid) since I was 16 but never have had a saw with a 3/8" chisel. Simply put, IT WAS AWESOME! I had a blast with this saw. I did read some of the other users ratings about this saw running a little low on power versus the MS-391. I ran it through some pretty large trees last night that were not laying in an ideal position, so there was a lot of bar pinching. I didn't have any issues with power at all. A few times when the bar was buried deep in the log I would feel a small slow down or slight bogging on the engine but if I let up on pushing the saw hard, it corrected itself immediately. For me, I definitely don't need any more power than this saw has. Starting was quite easy thanks to the decomp valve. I tried starting by accident without the decomp valve engaged and that was not fun. Not much more to say except it is a Stihl and the quality that made them a legend in saws, is still very much present in this model.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Underpowered, disappointing I owned a MS 311 with a 20 inch bar for several months. I kept hoping as it got broke in it would perform better. The saw would bog down in wood that my 20 year 025 would blast through. I honestly got tired of holding a 14 pound saw that would not cut. After several trips to my Stihl dealer seeing if a carberator adjustment would help, I gave up on the MS 311. My dealer and I worked out a trade for a MS 362CM. It is the saw I have been looking for! With the first tank it powered through a tree about the same width as the bar(20 inches). It was the same tree that bogged the MS 311. I saved a piece to compare the saws. I think the MS 311 is underpowered for a 20 inch bar with 3/8 pitch chain. I recommend at least a MS 391 or the MS 362 like I now own for this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Freakin Love It! Very thankful to the tech at my local store who talked me into this saw. I was long to replace/ upgrade from my Husqvarna 345 as I needed something that could power through the hardwoods we have here in Ohio. This saw is perfect! It’s smallest of the Stihl “big” saws, i.e., 3/8” pitch chains and higher horsepower, but it doesn’t feel overly large. On my first day of use I was able to easily cut up a very large wind fallen maple. There’s no way that would have happened with other saw. Worth the investment on the first job!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome product Had to get a big brother to my ms251 and the 311 is doing the job well, it is a little heavy but I got used to it but it has good power when I'm on a job where my ms251 is outmatched, that's when the 311 comes out and takes over.
