Important Information

WARNING! The occurrence called “kickback” can cause serious or fatal injury. Always read the instruction manual carefully before using your saw. STIHL uses a green and yellow color-coding system to help you select a powerhead, bar and chain combination that complies with the kickback requirements of ANSI Standard B175.1 (gasoline-powered saws) and §30 of UL 1662/ ANSI Standard B175.1 (electric chainsaws). Ask your STIHL dealer about safe operating procedures and the advantages of the STIHL Quickstop® chain brake, STIHL Quickstop® Plus (Q) additional chain braking feature, STIHL reduced kickback bars and STIHL low-kickback saw chains.

STIHL recommends the use of green reduced kickback bars and green low kickback chains on all STIHL chainsaws.

MS 291 is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 343.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from No complaints! This is an awesome saw! I have owned other brand saws in my lifetime and I will not purchase another brand saw again! Cuts through downed trees like a hot knife through butter. The power of my MS 291 is great and I have not had, nor expect, any issues with it. Makes cutting lengths for my firewood a breeze.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good saw, built well after looking for a larger saw then the one I had Settled on this model of Stihl chain saw. Starts well and does a good job on larger logs (trees). I would have given five stars but when cold it would not keep running at idle at all. Whent back to the store and the told me how to adjust it and the problem is mostly fixed. When warmed up it is strong and does a good job.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the saw but one complaint Maybe it is considered that only cheap saws have the fuel ratio molded into the plastic, I don’t know. But, I have quite a few pieces of equipment from different brand names and they usually take either 40:1 or 50:1 fuel to oil ratio. I prefer the ratio to be molded into the plastic so that I don’t have to look at the manual and then write the ratio in yellow paint marker on the piece of equipment. Just saves time and looks better when the ratio is molded into the plastic. If it is molded into the plastic already then I’m sorry, I didn’t see it because it’s not on the fuel cap or next to the cap. Saw runs great with plenty of power for my small farm.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Runs like a scolded dog. When it runs This saw runs like a scolded dog. Eats through a tree like nothing. But On my 2nd tank of gas it shut off and wouldnt stay running with true fuel. 30 minutes later it started. It would start and run for hours but if I sat it down for a few hours I couldnt get it back to running. Has done this multiple times. I took it to the dealer. Waited 5 days. They just said it starts, fuel lines pressure right. I dont know what to tell ya. Now I'm past 7 days. And pretty invested into a saw I cant get to run. It's the oddest thing ever.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dependable and well built saw I have been using Stihl saws for over 40 years. I still have my original O41 and occasionally use it. Runs great! The MS 291 is a dependable midsize/ mid weight saw that handles well and does what I ask of it. I only wish it had a compression release so it was a little easier on my 69 yr. old wrists. I have a pro model 36 with a release and it makes a difference. I sorta miss the torque of the old Stihls but not the smoke or weight. Keep your saw clean, sharp, use quality mix, fuel, bar lube, and it will not let you down. I would recommend the 291 as a fine all purpose saw.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wood shark! This saw cuts through everything like butter and will eat up wood like a great white chomping on a seal. I’ve never enjoyed cutting wood so much in my life until I put my hands on this machine. Starts with one pull, runs beautifully and is well balanced with no vibration. If anyone is giving this saw less than a 5/5 they either got a lemon or don’t know how to run a chainsaw.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Hard starting out of the box. Sorry, not my first Stihl product but the first one that started so hard. Almost returned it but we stopped using the full choke setting when it was cold. It didn't flood and it started better. Once it's warmed up it still needs half choke to start if you shut it down. I have 2 other Stihl saws that run great and a 42 year old Jonsered that will out cut all of them until you have to put it down to get the feeling back in your arms. Wish I could give it a better review but the jury is still out right now and I'm looking at 200 cord of firewood that needs to be dealt with before the snow flies.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Value Owned this product for 5 years now. Light weight, cuts fast, very good on fuel consumption, starts easily. Used for storm cleanup, fire wood, and yard maintenance. Great value for the price. I like to cut faster as my work keeps me busy. Giving me more free time to me then cutting. Highly recommend this product.

Standard Features

  • Pre-Separation Air Filtration System
This time-saving technology boosts the efficiency of the engine’s filter system, doubling the time between air filter cleanings. Air drawn into the engine is first separated via centrifugal force, ejecting the heavier dirt particles before being routed to the air filter. This pre-separation means less dirt to be captured by the air filter, resulting in less frequent cleaning and maintenance.
