  • Reduced-Emission Engine Technology - Caring for Nature

  • Built in the USA
Indicates products that are built in the United States from domestic and foreign parts and components.

    More information

  • Pre-Separation Air Filtration System
This time-saving technology boosts the efficiency of the engine’s filter system, doubling the time between air filter cleanings. Air drawn into the engine is first separated via centrifugal force, ejecting the heavier dirt particles before being routed to the air filter. This pre-separation means less dirt to be captured by the air filter, resulting in less frequent cleaning and maintenance.

    More information

  • Anti-Vibration System
STIHL has developed a system for minimizing the vibration levels of handheld outdoor power equipment. The STIHL anti-vibration system helps reduce operator fatigue and provides a more comfortable working experience.
  • Side-Access Chain Tensioner
The side-access chain tensioner makes it much more convenient for the user to adjust the saw chain with a bar wrench as opposed to the typical location of the guide bar adjustment screw.
  • Toolless fuel and oil caps with retainers
Simply lift the lever and twist the caps to remove or tighten. There‘s no need to use a tool to tighten or loosen.

Important Information

WARNING! The occurrence called “kickback” can cause serious or fatal injury. Always read the instruction manual carefully before using your saw. STIHL uses a green and yellow color-coding system to help you select a powerhead, bar and chain combination that complies with the kickback requirements of ANSI Standard B175.1 (gasoline-powered saws) and §30 of UL 1662/ ANSI Standard B175.1 (electric chainsaws). Ask your STIHL dealer about safe operating procedures and the advantages of the STIHL Quickstop® chain brake, STIHL Quickstop® Plus (Q) additional chain braking feature, STIHL reduced kickback bars and STIHL low-kickback saw chains.

STIHL recommends the use of green reduced kickback bars and green low kickback chains on all STIHL chainsaws.

MS 271 FARM BOSS® is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 383.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from If needed to, I'd buy again. But I won't. This saw is far and away the easiest and most dependable chainsaw I've ever owned. At the moment I own one electric, one cordless and three gas saws, the newly purchased Stihl the only Stihl. The smaller non-gas saws are greatest for limbing, and cutting limbs into usable firewood (less carbon footprint). However, the Stihl is the best at leveling stumps so they can be ground down and to cut timber into usable pieces. I only wish I'd purchased this Stihl long ago!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent saw After the February 28 tornado, I purchased my ms271 with a 20 in bar. No problems starting or cutting. 3 days straight 8 hours a day cutting trees. Used motomix and wood cutterbar oil.Never a miss fire, used less than 1/2 gallon fuel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My 3rd Stihl and this one is the best.!!!! We live on a small farm in Rochester NY. We have many storms and this saw has saved my life already. It's power is amazing compared to the older saw's I ran ms059 and ms 170. It is easy to start for us elder guys and has less vibration. I just love this saw. Thank you Danny's small engine and repair.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome saw! Been using this saw for 3 straight weekends now, and have many more to go. This thing starts with 1 - 2 pulls every time & just chews through trees. It does get a bit heavy after about an hour or so, but I'm not complaining. What saw wouldn't? Only recommendation I have (and you should be doing this anyway) is check the bar nuts fairly frequently. I lost one on my 3rd run. Luckily I have 2 extras.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loving it so far This is the 2nd Stihl I have owned. I received the MS250 as a donation (one of more than 75 Stihl saws bought with local donations) to help clean up the more than 2 million cubic yards of debris following the January twin storms/tornadoes in Albany, Georgia.. After volunteering for about 3 days a week for a month, and chainsawing for 8-10 hour days, that saw was getting ragged out, and I needed a larger saw to go through some the bigger trees I was running into. I traded in the 250 and bought this from MS271 Lee Power Equipment in Leesburgh Georgia, who helped me with the price and a replacement chain (highly recommend them!). Since I got this, I can say that it starts up very easy, and is handling the larger trees like a dream. The 20 inch bar is perfect for this saw. Its very well balanced, and makes my volunteer work go easier.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Storm killed giants We had a large 36 inch diameter red oak come down during a severe ice storm. Knowing my smaller brand x saw would not handle this tree I purchased the 271 farm boss with 20 inch bar. Extremely impressed with the power and speed this saw displayed in cutting this tree. The only issue that I found was when I decided to rip cut slabs from the trunk the chips clogged the discharge chute because it was ripping this hardwood so quickly. Slowing my cutting solved this issue.
