Couldn't ask for any more in a chainsaw.
Wore out a non-Stihl chainsaw and bought the 291 as a replacement. The 291 was stolen and replaced with a 271. Nearly the same displacement/weight as the 291, but a bit less expensive. I cut firewood for 3 families. We try to have 20-22 full cords going into the winter, so it gets plenty of use. It has never failed me in any way. A pleasure to use, although it can get a bit heavy after a long day of use. I've also dealt with 2 different dealers and the service from both has been outstanding.

    I only recommend Stihl
Bought this saw after a hurricane in 2016. I burned up another brand of saw cutting up several large (20' + diameter) pine trees. Bought the Farm Boss from a local hardware store. This dealer actual knew something about their saws, unlike the large home improvement store. I needed to be able to cut up storm debri and fell larger trees. They suggested the Farm Boss. Thought it was a little under powered for 3.5hp, but once I switched to the "yellow dot" chain it ripped through everything. ... read more Keep in mind this is not the best saw for those that do not have experience. The yellow dot chains can have serious kick back.

    Just the chainsaw I needed.
A storm caused several trees to fall in my yard and my older saw wasn't up to the task of cutting these down to size. This saw was excellent!! It made quick work of these 15, 55 foot, trees. I didn't feel any fatigue from using this chainsaw. I also didn't feel the vibration I've gotten used to having with other chainsaws. Thank you, Stihl, for making a great chainsaw.

Wanted a light saw for trimming and limbing. Purchased with 14inch bar an thin chain. PERFECT ! Plenty of power , easy to use, light an maneuverable. Actually use it to cut more than I thought. Goes through 6-8 inch oak no problems. This my third stihl saw , now I have a small medium an large. Would recommend stihl saws to anyone . Dealer network a big plus , easy to get parts an service!!

Plenty of power in a lightweight and compact design.
I purchased this saw as a lightweight alternative to my MS310, primarily for taking down small trees growing in the fence lines. I recently purchased this saw with a 14" bar and have now used it twice. I am amazed how well the saw performs, even when cutting through larger diameter trees. The saw is very light which has helped me cut for several hours without my arms and shoulders getting tired. I would definitely recommend this saw for taking down small trees, trimming, and cutting limbs off of ... read more felled trees. Time will tell how the saw does in terms of dependability, but I'm confident based on my previous experiences. I found several features of the saw which make it well worth the investment: 1# Size and weight - compact and light. 2) Clear bar oil and fuel tanks which provide easy visibility to fluid levels. 3) Great power-to-weight. 4) Easy to start, just set the choke and prime the ball when cold out. The only feature I'm not crazy about is the locking bar oil and fuel caps are plastic and not metal #hence my lower rating for quality#. I prefer the metal caps like I have on the MS310.

Light, starts easily, runs well. Seems to stay well cooled with continuous use.
Bought to help clear up dozens of sick and fallen trees on the family property. It supplements an MS 271 and an MS461. The saw, being light, is an excellent tool for limbing and bucking appropiately sized fallen timber. It starts and runs well. After break, in it runs very smoothly and has good throttle response. It is surprisingly stronger than what I expected from a saw rated at less than 2 horsepower. I have found that I use it for diameters greater than what I probably should. I let the 14 ... read more inch bar and chain do the cutting. I have yet to sharpen or change the green chain after hrs of use. It is still sharp. I have kept the chain out of the dirt, of course that helps. I run high octane premix with no problems. I realize that it is not a professional grade saw and understand it's intended use. It is without question a respectable solid tool.

    Good feature, quality product.
Great saw, first Stihl saw I have ever owned. Won't be the last. Really like the compression release and how well the saw is built. Even though the saw is considered a farm and ranch saw I think it compares to the commercial Husqvarna saws. Definetly will purchase other Stihl products.

    Awesome Saw
I have had this saw about 2 months now. It makes me want to cut wood for a living. Unfortunately, my wife demands I keep my day job because I wear out before the saw even gets warmed up and she like to spend a lot of money. This saw is so much fun to use, I can't wait for the weekend to get here so I can cut more firewood. It's easy to maintain, and has plenty of power. I love it! I've learned the hard way and bought 3 less expensive cheaper branded saws that didn't last or work as well. If you ... read more are in the market for a quality chainsaw, don't bother with other brands. This will be the last saw you ever need.

This product is very user friendly.
I purchased several acres of heavily wooded property in Arkansas and I was in need of a saw that I could rely on to get the job done. Of course I thought of STIHL as I have always heard they were great saws. I went to my local dealer who was very helpful and recommended the MS 311 after I explained my situation. I have operated many different chainsaws in my day and none of them can hold a candle to this saw. The performance of this saw is excellent. The saw starts easily and runs perfectly from ... read more the second its started, seems like it doesn't even need to warm up. So far I have cut down about an acres worth of trees most of them being old cedar and haven't had a single issue with the saw. The saw does have some weight to it but I think thats to be expected with a little bigger saw. The power is excellent and with the ⅜" chain makes short work of anything in its way.

Good power. Get a carbide chain right away
Run saw 2 weeks and about50 hours so far. Running good. Power is great cutting large oak logs. Saw idles a little high and has a slight sputter when running full throttle. Its a heavy saw but cuts well enough that you can stay on saw all day and not get too tired to keep going. I have been having a hard time getting a carbide chain for it. Ff did not have one. Checked several places and no luck. I am cleaning up after a logging crew and cutting a lot of wood that has been partially buried in ... read more ground. Chain has taken a beating so far.

    Great saw but heavy
I love this saw, I've owned it for 7 years now. It handles most everything I throw at it without issue. starts every time, power is good. Making sure you buy the right chain for the job makes this saw an animal.....right till you start bucking with it then you realize the weight of this saw and can wear you plum out if your not use to doing it all day and this is where a smaller saw can help you out. cutting the truck of a tree is great and I have embarrassed my friends with their other brand ... read more saws countless times while cutting up a tree with this saw cutting it like a hot knife thru butter BUT come time to limb the smaller stuff and again a small saws job but manageable, would I buy this saw again? yes all day everyday.

Great saw, looking forward to using it for years to come.
I had never used a Stihl chainsaw before even though i have used saws for over 30 years. I have mostly used another brand before this that was a pro level saw, really heavy and hard to crank. This saw is really close to the performance of that saw and in a much lighter package. I've never used a saw of this size range that would run this long on a tank of fuel. I've so far in the first couple weeks cut up 3 big Hickory trees, 2 big white oaks, 1 large Pine and a couple junk trees that i'm not ... read more sure what they are. It runs great, I feel it's at or just below the bottom level of the pro saws.

a middle saw that can do it all
Most of the "homeowner" style saws, which are great saws, tend to be underpowered and can only go up to an 18" bar, but the price is right. The Pro saws have the power and can take bar lengths as long as you want, but the price doubles, at least from homeowner saws. I wanted a 20" bar with more power as I had 36" wide by 50' tall pine to cut up. The MS 291 checks all the boxes without costing an arm and a leg. It has all the standard Stihl goodies, like it starts every time, runs as long as you ... read more want it to, powers through long cuts and in general is a great saw.

This is our go to saw
This is our second MS-291.The original is 5 years old and has been our go to saw. We needed another saw and the choice was obvious. One stays at the farm and another in the garage. Living in the woods having a dependable saw is not a luxury it is a necessity. We trust our Stihl whether it`s saving us from a blown down tree ,a rotten log or to cut a monster oak off of our mother in laws roof. Firewood cutting is just another task this saw excels at.

All the power you will need !!!
I have a small farm in NY and burn approximately 25 to 30 face cords a year. I bought a ms 291 chain saw and just could not believe the power of this saw. my old STIHL 026 couldn't come close to the power of this ms 291. I highly recommend this saw to anyone who burns wood or has a small to mid size farm. I know this saw will make life a little easier as it has for me in the year I have owned it.

Excellent power for a light weight saw
I use this saw regularly for clearing blow downs on the hiking trails where I might be carry the saw and all my other gear five to ten miles. I too also own a MS-261 for this purpose and carry it when I know there will be lots of bigger trees. The 201 cuts great as long as the chain is very sharp. The small teeth do dull much faster than the teeth on the larger saws. I always carry two extra chains for this sort of work so dulling is not an issue in the field. In addition to be lightweight ... read more and powerful for its size, it is also very quiet and vibration free. This is a great benefit to those of us (like myself) who do not saw on a daily basis. There is one major drawback to this saw. If you get the bar and chain stuck in a tree (this is always a concern when clearing blow downs that are loaded in every direction) the bar and chain cannot be removed without first removing the external clutch mechanism. This requires removing the spark plug, immobilizing the piston, and then unscrewing the clutch. The MS-261 has an internal clutch so it is not an issue on my other saw. I would recommend this saw without reservation except for this one concern.

    All in One Super Saw
Great for what I use it for, cutting brush. Also can cut up fallen trees. Just be patient on large limbs and trunks. Let the saw cut through itself. I cut up a 18 inch diameter fallen tree yesterday. I have put app. 100 hours on the saw. Great saw mainly for brush, but can cut bigger stuff. Lightweight. I can use it all day. If cutting cords of wood or large trees as your primary use get a larger saw. If needing a universal saw with the main use smaller stuff, get this one. I love it. Cost is ... read more high, but I have found it well worth it many times over. With 16" blade I don't have to bend over as much or reach into the brush as far to cut. I would buy this again in a minute. I am now looking at a bigger saw because we have many downed trees. I will then have 2 Stihl saws. In the immediate family we probably have 10 Stihl saws. Very happy family.

    Excellent light weight saw!!!!!!!!
I worked the saw all day. I used it for limbing up of about 40 trees I dropped using my ms 261 CEM(another great saw). This saw has very sharp chain and was very maneuverable in some thick clutter from the dropping of the trees. Features I like: 1. Light and very compact 2. very very easy to start 3. no vibration feature doesn't shake and jar you 4. easy to handle in tight quarters. 5. cuts without wanting to back down I haven't tried it on the large stuff yet up to about 1 to 10 ... read more inches. This saw is probably how the new saws will be coming out in the future. Little saw with a powerful punch. Throws large chips never had problems with oiling. highly reccommend
