Excellent tool, light weight, runs strong.
I purchased this saw for personal use around small farm for pruning and cutting small firewood. I have two other larger saws sporting 16 and 20 inch bars that work well but are just too heavy for small work. This saw out runs them, strong acceleration, very good lube system, and easy to use oil and fuel filler caps. I would definitely recommend this saw for anyone needing easy start, reliability, and ease of use. Lightest saw I have and packs a lot of power.

    I love this saw!
Easy to handle in tight spots and cuts extremely well. Starts with just a light tug. I was initially skeptical that it would work so well but I'm a definite convert.

Good at what it is designed for
I have had the Farm Boss for years and have been very happy with it. But as I get older, it seems to get heavier. I got this little saw for hauling back in the woods for trail clearing etc. Light as a feather, works well for its size, does what it is supposed to do.

MS 291 is the old Farm Boss
I was about to make the call and buy the MS 271 "Farm Boss" when someone told me that if I was buying a Farm Boss because someone recommended it to me, that I should consider that the MS 271 "Farm Boss" was not the same as the "Farm Boss" your friend has. The original Farm Boss actually has a lot of power and that I should step up to the MS 291 to get the equivalent power of the old Farm Boss. So, I decided to buy the MS 291 for the extra power. I don't use a chainsaw like most people. I attach ... read more a 'lumber mill' guide to mine and cut lumber out of limbs. The extra power was a big help. Cutting long ways in a limb (even with the proper ripping chain) is hard work for any chainsaw but the MS 291 is "the boss" when it comes to this kind of work.

    Excellent Purchase
Puchased thie MS291 (20 inch blade) as a replacement for my old chainsaw. Made my purchase decision based on reviews of several different chainsaws, and the high recommendation of my older brother. After making the purchase, I used it the same day to take care of a fallen 50-60 ft tree that had taken out my neighbor's fence. Less than 2 hours after starting my project, the tree was gone, the wood was stacked and I was loading back up to leave. IMPRESSIVE!! It cut through the tree like knife ... read more through butter. Definatley worth my investment. I can't wait to tackle more tree projects!!

The only saw you'll ever need!
I purchased the MS291 about 4 months ago. I took down about 10 hardwoods for a friend the morning a bought it. Wow, did I have a smile on my face! Could not get over how fast the cut rate was the the yellow chain. On Jan. 22, tornadoes devastated parts of our city. The following Sat. I went out with a clean up crew and ran 7 tanks of gas through it! I was worn out but the MS291 never got tired. I've cut a lot of trees over the last 15 plus years with a Different brand saw, but after using my ... read more first Stihl saw I will never use anything else!

    Great saw!
Easy to start, lightweight. I've been very pleased over the years with the performance of my 280, but my new 193 has become my favorite due to the lighter weight.

Most valuable single tool I own
I know I use this saw way too much, but the combination of weight, power, and single hand use is absolutely incredible. Whether cutting numerous 1"-4" saplings, limbing larger trees, or almost any other property maintenance task for which a hand saw or loppers would be appropriate. This saw is large enough to handle most problems in the city and on large lots/acreage is invaluable to keep with you "just in case." The only downside to this saw is that it will go through some chains.

    Reliable, strong, and lightweight.
I chose this model for frequent occasional use. Commercial quality homeowner tool. Has always started, always runs strong. I replaced the default 14" thin kerf bar and chain with a 0.050" chain and 16" bar to meet my needs. Motor needs a minute to reach optimum temps to run full speed but then runs strong.

    Lightweight Powerhouse - Firewood Ferrari
When I realized Stihl made a rear handle version of the time proven Arborist choice 201 C-T top handle saw, I had to get it. STARTS VERY EASILY and 16" bar melts through all the standing dead Ash around here. Only negative was POOR BAR/CHAIN LUBRICATION. A Machinist by trade, I checked it out with bluing to discover the oil hole in bar did not line up with oil channel in saw.(only 1/3 open!) AND the black rubber plug seated proud of the housing preventing upper rear "wing" of the bar from ... read more mating flush with the oil channel. Oily razor blade sliced it flush (removed 1/32"). An air pencil with a 1/16dia. end mill widened the channel a bit and ovaled the bar oil hole to correct this. I use new SAE 30 weight (as used for decades) and chain stays properly lubed and dust does not plug up the flow. I set Oil adjustment to max and now chain is always wet. Oil is inexpensive. Must have been some kind of design tolerance issue. I ordered the saw Nov.2015 FYI. That was disappointing but I've seen that sort of thing many times over the years with high end tools I tend to buy. This is a PERFECT saw for a ground crew or pulpwood cutting(if still done by humans!) all day long I think. Very smooth power with little vibration. Overall I'm happy with this saw. Look forward to decades of use.

starting it up I like how you don't have to struggle to start it
I think it kicks back a lot more than my other saw

    Great lightweight saw
This is a great power to weight ratio saw. The M-tronic works much better than expected. I've buried the bar in a huge ash and it buzzed right through it. The saw is actually a pleasure to cut with and is a great compliment to my MS 270. It is expensive, but the power to weight ratio is unrivaled.

What you would expect from Stihl
I purchased the MS271 Farm Boss with the 20" bar. I only have 1-1/2 hours on it so far, but I'm familiar with Stihl saws and trimmers. If you're looking for a saw that will do all of the work you ask of it, short of being a professional lumber jack, this is it. Plenty of power. You don't even have to go full throttle to get through most logs. The Stihl engineers build these things to work hard. I was pleased to see that after 1-1/2 hours straight of cutting, I still didn't need to adjust chain ... read more tension, or add fuel, or chain oil yet. Nice.

If needed to, I'd buy again.
But I won't. This saw is far and away the easiest and most dependable chainsaw I've ever owned. At the moment I own one electric, one cordless and three gas saws, the newly purchased Stihl the only Stihl. The smaller non-gas saws are greatest for limbing, and cutting limbs into usable firewood (less carbon footprint). However, the Stihl is the best at leveling stumps so they can be ground down and to cut timber into usable pieces. I only wish I'd purchased this Stihl long ago!

    Incredible Saw!
I've used many other saws from other manufacturers, and very expensive but the Farm Boss is better than all those saws I've ever used! At this price, I can't believe how much power it has. It starts on the first pull every time and even on the hottest and most humid days. I've dropped it from over 10 feet a couple of times and the only damage was a couple of scratches. I've never had a problem with this saw after hundreds of hours of use. It cuts through even the hardest of woods like a hot ... read more knife through butter! There are not enough accolades for this saw--it's supersedes all of my expectations and is of the quality, durability, and reliability that I've come to expect from Stihl.

Awesome now the motor is broken in
This was a very hard starter for the first month I had it working on the weekends cutting down a forest of locust trees, even when following the choke recs noted on here. Finally broke in and starts like a champ now, even after sitting a couple months unused this winter. Love it now.

    Exceeds Expectations
I was told by multiple people to go with a STIHL after having had another companies chainsaw and had nothing but trouble basically from the beginning. I have USED my new STIHL in some pretty tricky and tight spots with cutting a lot of small to medium trees and a few larger ones. Whatever I set the saw to no matter how thick the wood or pile of wood it cuts through it like a knife through warm butter. It is effortless to use and starts and runs like a dream! One of my favorite things I have ever ... read more bought! STIHL lives up to its reputation!!! It does get heavy after awhile but hey I'm building more muscles!!!

    Great Saw
I bought an MS311 about 3 years ago, when I had to cut 8 large mature Oaks & Hickorys. I also have two other chain saws, name starts with P. You cannot run one of those Ps for 1/2 hour without stopping to work on it, and that's if you can get one of them running. The MS311 cuts great, and really shines when cutting up trees. The trees I dropped were all 24"+ diameter at the base, and I cut the trees up into stove lengths in 2 sessions of about 3 hours each. Two tanks of gas, and no chain ... read more sharpening. I use a chainsaw infrequently, and this saw has started easily after months of inactivity. Just use the Stihl 2 cycle oil, and no gas problems. Starts quickly, no matter if it's 60 degrees or 16 degrees. Some have complained a little about the weight, but I didn't notice it being heavy. I'm a large fellow, perhaps the reason.
