Land Beyond Repair

Just outside Williamsburg, Kentucky, sits 600 acres of thriving forestry. But this wasn’t always the case. Twenty years ago, this land was devastated. The product of decades of mining efforts, the earth here had been left scarred and barren, the soil so compacted it prevented anything from growing. Many who knew of this place saw it as a lost cause, a dead place beyond saving. But legacies aren’t born by subsiding to the status quo.

A Family Tradition

Lee Bryant isn’t a stranger to things built from the ground up. His great grandfather started a general store in 1928. His grandfather opened a building supply hardware store in 1947. The drive to do something not just for himself but for future generations was in his blood. Lee had taken on the family business and helped it grow to two locations, both now STIHL Dealers. But the urge to make his own mark persisted, and when he became aware of the wasteland outside Williamsburg, he saw an opportunity.

Something from Nothing

In 2000, Lee took ownership of the mine land and took to stewarding its dramatic change. From earth augers to chainsaws and sprayers, Lee and his partners relied on a range of STIHL tools to take on everything from breaking apart the soil to clearing invasive species. Since starting, they have planted more than 50,000 trees, and in 2014, they earned the title of Tree Farm of the Year for the state of Kentucky.

STIHL chainsaws are German engineered and built in America.* We also go a step further and custom manufacture our own guide bars and saw chains for all our machines in house. This ensures our chainsaws meet our standards in design and performance - standards that have made STIHL the clear choice for professionals and homeowners, making STIHL the #1 selling brand of chainsaws worldwide.

Earth Augers

STIHL augers and drills are lightweight and ready to use – and possess the kind of technology that prompt professional landscapers and contractors to choose STIHL for their handheld outdoor power equipment needs.

For smaller areas that require greater accuracy and control, a STIHL manual backpack sprayer combines constant pressure and ease of use with little maintenance.

A Promising Future

Lee doesn’t just look to the trees for a sign of all he’s accomplished. He sees signs of what his work means in the very dirt that was once too damaged to support life. A diversity of animal tracks — rabbits, coyotes, bobcats, quail, deer and more — litter the forest floor, indicating a resurgence of wildlife that this land had not seen in decades. For Lee, however, it isn’t just about what the work means today. It’s about what it will mean for future generations who will enjoy the natural beauty of this place. It’s about leaving a story behind about what’s worth saving. It’s about legacy.
