Model Features

  • Reduced-Emission Engine Technology - Caring for Nature
The STIHL Inc. “Caring for Nature” seal identifies its powered products that are more environmentally conscious, producing zero or low exhaust emissions. STIHL Inc. defines “low exhaust emissions” as being cleaner than EPA and/or CARB exhaust emission standards.

    More information

  • STIHL ElastoStart™
The ElastoStart™ starter handle is an exclusive feature of STIHL. It is a starting grip with a built-in shock absorber that helps reduce the effort when pulling on the starter cord. The ElastoStart™ starter grip noticeably reduces the sudden peak forces (compression) normally felt during cranking. The forces which occur at the grip after the first compression stroke are smoothed out.
  • Decompression Valve
The decompression valve, also referred to as 'deco' or 'deco valve', vents compression in the cylinder for easier starting. The decompression valve temporarily reduces the compression in the combustion chamber during cranking and helps reduce the effort needed to pull the starter rope. It is opened manually and closes automatically as soon as the engine fires.
  • IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor
The IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor is designed to automatically adjust the air/fuel ratio when the air filter becomes restricted or partially clogged and maintains the engine’s correct RPM. IntelliCarb™ uses air from the clean side of the air filter to control the diaphragm and flow of fuel. As the air filter becomes dirty and less air is available for the carburetor, the IntelliCarb™ system adjusts the fuel flow to compensate for the decrease in air flow. This is in contrast to typical carburetors that utilize this air from the “dirty” side of the air box.
  • Side-Access Chain Tensioner
The side-access chain tensioner makes it much more convenient for the user to adjust the saw chain with a bar wrench as opposed to the typical location of the guide bar adjustment screw.
  • Adjustable Automatic Oiler
The Adjustable Automatic Oiler allows the user to adjust the lubricant of the guide bar and saw chain for different bar lengths and cutting conditions.
  • Toolless fuel and oil caps with retainers
Simply lift the lever and twist the caps to remove or tighten. There‘s no need to use a tool to tighten or loosen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent saw with plenty of power Overall this is a great saw with plenty of power. Having stepped up from the MS 362 this is a huge jump. Weight difference to me is not noticiable even though there is about one pound difference. Only negative I could find with this saw is the air filter does get dirtier faster than our MS 441c and MS 362. March 26, 2014

Rated 5 out of 5 by Absolute great power to weight ratio I'm not a professional logger by no means but i cut a serious amount of firewood. Probably 25-30 2 ton dump truck loads a year. This saw is amazing I wouldn't be afraid of using a 36" bar. It starts on the first or second pull every time.It runs amazing. Wouldn't recommend if planning on limbing up allot but that's just me cause i baby my saws and don't want them scratched up as much as possibly needed . would recommend to anyone. March 15, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by This saw is powerful and precise. I have owned the 461 for 1 month during which time I have run the saw for 60 hours at altitudes between 10000 and 120000 feet. It has performed perfectly through break in and it now has full power. I find that with the length of bar combined with power I don't have to bend over to cut small trees. I have been cutting through thick windfall timber between 20 and 30 inch tree diameters, Fir and Spruce, the saw sprays the wood out like a fire hose. It is a heavy saw and if I was doing anything but cutting windfall and firewood I would have considered a 441. But I am pleased with the machine and plan to be very careful not to over rev or overheat the saw. It has a penchant for running on the ragged edge of what is achievable by German engineering, so I monitor, tune and maintain the saw very carefully. September 22, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Plenty of power!!! Purchased this saw to up-grade from my ms 362 and have no regrets! Awesome saw with plenty of power to knock down all hard wood you could find. Bought this saw to use on any job. Clearing fence line, felling trees, bucking firewood, this saw is perfect for anything. If you don't mind the extra pound compared to the ms 362, and have the budget, I highly recommend the ms 461 September 15, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by great saw but having problems I purchased the saw a month ago and worked with it daily cleaning up after a wild fire on a Montana ranch. It is a great saw, good power, easily cleaned after a hard days work and well built. I started to loose power in the cut and the saw sounded different and it is in the shop right now. It has been well cared for, followed the Sthil guidelines so not sure what is up with the saw. I would still recommend the saw and hope mine is going to be fixed. July 10, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent choice for wood burning homeowner I was on the fence about which saw to buy. I needed a saw for firewood since we put an insert in 2 years ago. I've used a MS250 for a couple of years but got tired of borrowing it and wanted my own saw. I wanted to upgrade to a larger saw so that I can buck up larger trees. I also wanted the option of using a chainsaw mill at some point in the future and they require powerful saws. So I opted for the 461. I've been very happy with it so far. The first delivery I got from the tree service guy was 28" oak. No problem for this saw. Little effort required and very little vibration. Starts very easily. The only slight downside is that this saw drinks fuel. But I guess that is to be expected when using a more powerful saw. In conclusion, the 461 is not too much saw for a homeowner who has occasion to use it occasionally. If budget is not your primary concern, I'd get the larger saw if you're on the fence. June 20, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome I cut a good bit of firewood for myself and my dad and have a 311 which is a really good saw for what it is but I wanted something with a little more meat. I thought about the 441 but found out the 461 was 10% off so I said why not. So I got it and the first tree I fell was 25" across. Wow. The power was awesome. Only being about a pound heavier than the 311 I was impressed. After a few cuts I got my 311 just to feel the difference. I was amazed at how much less vibrations the 461 had. I have since then put six tanks of gas through it and it runs better and better. It cuts my cutting time in half as well which is a plus. I still have the 311 and switch between the two for cool down periods but I love when I pick up the 461. I have always been a Stihl man and this proves my loyality is well placed. I also have other Stihl products and am well pleased. Thank you Stihl for a great saw. June 15, 2013
