MS 461

MS 461
A well-balanced, professional chainsaw that is fuel efficient and low maintenance.

Model Features

  • STIHL ElastoStart™
The ElastoStart™ starter handle is an exclusive feature of STIHL. It is a starting grip with a built-in shock absorber that helps reduce the effort when pulling on the starter cord. The ElastoStart™ starter grip noticeably reduces the sudden peak forces (compression) normally felt during cranking. The forces which occur at the grip after the first compression stroke are smoothed out.
  • Decompression Valve
The decompression valve, also referred to as 'deco' or 'deco valve', vents compression in the cylinder for easier starting. The decompression valve temporarily reduces the compression in the combustion chamber during cranking and helps reduce the effort needed to pull the starter rope. It is opened manually and closes automatically as soon as the engine fires.
  • IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor
The IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor is designed to automatically adjust the air/fuel ratio when the air filter becomes restricted or partially clogged and maintains the engine’s correct RPM. IntelliCarb™ uses air from the clean side of the air filter to control the diaphragm and flow of fuel. As the air filter becomes dirty and less air is available for the carburetor, the IntelliCarb™ system adjusts the fuel flow to compensate for the decrease in air flow. This is in contrast to typical carburetors that utilize this air from the “dirty” side of the air box.
  • Side-Access Chain Tensioner
The side-access chain tensioner makes it much more convenient for the user to adjust the saw chain with a bar wrench as opposed to the typical location of the guide bar adjustment screw.
  • Toolless fuel and oil caps with retainers
Simply lift the lever and twist the caps to remove or tighten. There‘s no need to use a tool to tighten or loosen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Very powerfull I heat two houses garages and a shop with wood and burn 24 full cord every year. I had another brand for the last 15 years. Last year my dealer talked me into a Stihl 461. Wow. Cuts over twice as fast and weighs less than old saw. this baby is a brute. November 10, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Power and more Power! I read a few reviews on this saw from some experienced hotshot supervisors on FB that were not very nice so I was concerned about this product. Many individuals complained that the saw would start up and die, start up and die over and over so I asked the experts at Stihl about this issue and they told me it all had to do with fuel! They said our pump gas is horrible for these saws because of the corn additive. They recommended getting rid of saw mix after two weeks. Seemed extreme but I've been doing it religiously and so far I have not experienced any problems with this saw. This saw put my MS 440 Magnum to shame. I had to drop some large trees on my property 38 DBH and 44 DBH and man was I surprised, this saw cut as if it were cutting hot butter. Do I recommend this saw? Well, yeah it's a saw that belongs in everyones shop for sure! October 12, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by always liked the stihl chainsaws I have used the 440 & 460 before with great success, then i purchased a 660 5+ years ago and it never let me down. i just picked up my 461 today and am confident that stihl craftsmanship will allow me to use this for many years. October 9, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Glad to see they "Stihl" make this model saw Glad to see they still make this saw!My saw is actually the 046M / "Magnum". This saw appears to be the same saw as mine, when reading the current spec' sheet. I bought my saw in the last century! I'm a tree-felling engineer and I bought it to fell a tree where the risks to property and safety were great. I wanted a lot of horsepower and a fast cut and my original non-Stihl saw did not fit-the-bill. I was not disappointed in my new saw. I reserve this saw for those special purposes, so my saw sits for years sometimes without use. It always starts though when I need it. I just used it again this past week, to drop 1 high-risk tree and to cut up 3 others. All were 24"+ in diameter. With a 25" bar and "RS" chain, the saw cuts like a laser. I also have an 019 T "bucket saw" that has never let me down. I use it to climb and dismantle trees from the top down. Now, I'm looking to replace my old primary saw that is over 40 years old, with another Stihl. I'm leaning toward the "391" for it's higher power and so that I can stay with 3/8" RS chain. I'll put a 20" bar on it.Verify your review » October 8, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great saw wish I had it sooner I cut fire wood to sell all hard wood, oak, hickory and ash. I had been using a red 2171. Driving by the Sthil dealership one day I jokinglly told my wife I should stop and buy a bigger saw. She ask how much it cost, I told her and that was all that was said. Well, Christmas morning it was under the tree!! What a Christmas present, best toy I ever got. This is a great saw. It goes through 20" to 24" oak like it is 12" stuff. My only regret is that I did not have it sooner. August 10, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best out-of-the box east coast chainsaw I'm not a typical Stihl Fan as I just wanted a quality product. After using an 064, I was hooked. Nothing wrong with the Orange Brand, I have those too, but there's something un-quantifiable about a Stihl. Maybe it's the color scheme. I mod saws and the other brands are easier for that. But for a dependable out-of-the-box saw that will work hard all day , I believe this is the best east coast timber saw. Power to weight is good. Will pull a 28" bar or bigger with ease. June 27, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great saw I mostly just cut firewood but love having at least as much power as I need. This should do the trick. And you breathe in much cleaner air than my old 460. I think 20 percent less emissions is a conservative number. As far as power it took having about 22 inches of the bar buried in a very hard dead cedar and leveraging off the dawgs to stall it. I wanted to see what it would do. So great saw. And the less emissions are awesome. I could of cared less. But running it made a huge difference. Easy to start too June 22, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Love my 461 Used my 461 all weekend for the first time, great power and it just eats and eats. Big upgrade from the 039, looks awesome to! Does seem like the filter dirties fast and after 6 hours of running I was feeing it! June 9, 2015
