MS 461

MS 461
A well-balanced, professional chainsaw that is fuel efficient and low maintenance.

Model Features

  • Reduced-Emission Engine Technology - Caring for Nature
The STIHL Inc. “Caring for Nature” seal identifies its powered products that are more environmentally conscious, producing zero or low exhaust emissions. STIHL Inc. defines “low exhaust emissions” as being cleaner than EPA and/or CARB exhaust emission standards.

    More information

  • STIHL ElastoStart™
The ElastoStart™ starter handle is an exclusive feature of STIHL. It is a starting grip with a built-in shock absorber that helps reduce the effort when pulling on the starter cord. The ElastoStart™ starter grip noticeably reduces the sudden peak forces (compression) normally felt during cranking. The forces which occur at the grip after the first compression stroke are smoothed out.
  • Decompression Valve
The decompression valve, also referred to as 'deco' or 'deco valve', vents compression in the cylinder for easier starting. The decompression valve temporarily reduces the compression in the combustion chamber during cranking and helps reduce the effort needed to pull the starter rope. It is opened manually and closes automatically as soon as the engine fires.
  • IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor
The IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor is designed to automatically adjust the air/fuel ratio when the air filter becomes restricted or partially clogged and maintains the engine’s correct RPM. IntelliCarb™ uses air from the clean side of the air filter to control the diaphragm and flow of fuel. As the air filter becomes dirty and less air is available for the carburetor, the IntelliCarb™ system adjusts the fuel flow to compensate for the decrease in air flow. This is in contrast to typical carburetors that utilize this air from the “dirty” side of the air box.
  • Side-Access Chain Tensioner
The side-access chain tensioner makes it much more convenient for the user to adjust the saw chain with a bar wrench as opposed to the typical location of the guide bar adjustment screw.
  • Toolless fuel and oil caps with retainers
Simply lift the lever and twist the caps to remove or tighten. There‘s no need to use a tool to tighten or loosen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Best out-of-the box east coast chainsaw I'm not a typical Stihl Fan as I just wanted a quality product. After using an 064, I was hooked. Nothing wrong with the Orange Brand, I have those too, but there's something un-quantifiable about a Stihl. Maybe it's the color scheme. I mod saws and the other brands are easier for that. But for a dependable out-of-the-box saw that will work hard all day , I believe this is the best east coast timber saw. Power to weight is good. Will pull a 28" bar or bigger with ease. June 27, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great saw I mostly just cut firewood but love having at least as much power as I need. This should do the trick. And you breathe in much cleaner air than my old 460. I think 20 percent less emissions is a conservative number. As far as power it took having about 22 inches of the bar buried in a very hard dead cedar and leveraging off the dawgs to stall it. I wanted to see what it would do. So great saw. And the less emissions are awesome. I could of cared less. But running it made a huge difference. Easy to start too June 22, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Love my 461 Used my 461 all weekend for the first time, great power and it just eats and eats. Big upgrade from the 039, looks awesome to! Does seem like the filter dirties fast and after 6 hours of running I was feeing it! June 9, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great saw!! Just Like all stihl products, This saw is awesome and has tons of power! Ever since I bought my first stihl, I've been hooked. The quality is out standing!! Nothing starts and cuts as good as a stihl and this ms 461 is a great professional saw. I see myself having this ms 461 around for many years with the professional grade inside parts. You will tell the difference between the professional grade stihl saws to the standard saws. If you cut loads of firewood every year like me and want something to last, buy a stihl product saw and the ms 461 has enough power to cut up hard oak wood. Great great saw!!! Love it! May 29, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by fast cutting saw. I have cut logs with a 25" and 32" bar and there is no difference in how the saw cuts.I had a Sthi 390 the 461 cuts faster and is lighter so I am not as tired at the end of the day. I cut on average 15 rank of fire wood a year, I normally don't cut trees big enough to need a 32" bar unless a storm takes one down but when I have needed to use a 32" bar this saw handles it! Rated 5 out of 5 by This is the real deal Owning an MS290 for a few years now I haven't used it much until I bought five acres of property last year loaded with storm damaged and uncleared/unkempt oaks and several bull pines. My 290 could get the job done but not without bogging down at times or just taking time to make cuts. I just had to let it do its work at its pace. Not once did it fail me. I am cutting and thinning little by little the property by myself, taking good hardwood and bucking it down to stack for firewood. There are many cords of wood to harvest. I do this three or four days a week for several hours a day so I am definitely putting a chainsaw through its paces for a "farm and ranch" saw. I still have much to do.That said I will cry now once for the price and smile later with an MS461 rather than smile now and cry many times later with some other saw. And smiling I am. The bit of extra weight from the power head and 28" bar doesn't phase me much at all as that full chisel chain and nearly 6 beastly horsepower make quick and easy work of whatever I cut. It just flat out saves time in my cutting jobs and torques through the hardwoods with ease. I now own a saw that has the versatility to handle any job put before it. The 290 will serve as a good smaller saw and backup. I'm not a logger but a homeowner with acreage or a guy that can help a buddy with his cutting needs. March 19, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by It's a wood eating monster. I've been using a 51 Husqvarna for over 24 years. Had some loggers over at the neighbors property and they gave me a chance to use their Stihl 461 with a 25" bar. I couldn't put it down, they almost had to take it away from me. It was the best saw I had ever used. I went out and purchased a 461 the following week and am totally satisfied. Wood cutting has never been any easier. March 18, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Love it... Well I thought I should buy a once in a life time saw. Read some reviews and decided on this MS 461. Now being a home owner and not a logger you should have seen the envy in the eyes of some loggers as I picked up this saw. I ordered it with the 25in bar. It was a little bar heavy but not to bad. I grew up logging in the north east and used a jonsered 70 series as a yard saw. I did not blink at the weight because power is worth the weight. I took the saw home fired her up and went to town on an old rock maple needing to be cut. Hot knife through butter. This saw is a monster. You can not cheat on power and reliablity. Pay the man and walk away with the saw you want I did. I have not stopped smiling yet.!. March 12, 2015
